Merry christmas everyone
Santa has been and left a 2610 under the tree with v8 dvd
I have a sp3 deluxe with v6 upgrade on it at the moment my question is,
is it possible to use the new 2610 v8 on my older sp3 and can I register the two units to use the same softwere ie v8 and if so how?

Steady on Graham. Before you register the 2610, check the date to see if you qualify for City Navigator Version 9

If you register after a certain date (I think the date has already passed but I can't dind it on the Garmin website) you can then have the most up to date maps available on both units. :thumb

IIRC you don't need to register the unit to unlock an additional unit.
You're right, you don't need to register to unlock the maps, but you do need to register if you are want the free upgrade from Version 8 to Version 9 which I assume Graham will want.

When I bought my 2610, the relevant date was 1st Jan 06 IIRC. Now I would have been kicking myself if without thinking I'd registered it on the 26th Dec 05 and then had to pay to get the later version maps - when I was entitled to the latest maps just by stalling the registration by 5 days. If the relevant date has passed there's no problem, but if it hasn't passed yet, then don't register the 2610 until it has. The Garmin website used to clearly give the relevant dates for each product, but for some reason it doesn't anymore. Eg have a look at THIS PAGE it gives the realease date for the NT version but makes no mention of the standard version. :nenau

I've sent an e-mail to Garmin. Will let you know what the date is when I get a reply.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR REPLIES,I HAVE NOW OPENED AN ACCOUNT TO REGISTER BOTH UNITS AND WILL UNLOCK V8 WHEN I KNOW THE CUT OFF DATE FROM GARMIN

Ta, :bow IIRC a date in mid January has been mentioned. But that could be an educated guess or a complete guess :mmmm

I'm not sure, but i think the mid Jan date is for availability of CN9 standard, i think the cut-off for free upgrade is going to be same as CN9 NT (Oct-06) but don't hold me to that.....

the Garmin page doesn't mention the standard version at the moment, maybe the data is being changed ready for the rollout of CN9 standard?

I've had a reply from Garmin but TBH I don't think it clarifies matters. It says:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe. The NT version is currently available,
and we expect to see the standard version released early part of January 2007.
Regards, Tim Piercy
"

When I upgraded, I'm sure that the release date (which at the time was clearly shown on the Garmin website) was about 4 months before the availbilty date of the updated maps, so I think Swebb is right, but as its still not 100% clear from the e-mail IIWY I wouldn't register until Version 9 is out - at least then you will know for sure that you'll get the free upgrade.

IIRC you don't need to register the unit to unlock an additional unit.

You do need to register if;

1. you want to upgrade to the next version
or
2. you want to use the second unit unlock on the current version

Do not forget that the second unit unlock 'floats'
The first unlock is tied to the serial number of the original unit but...
...the second unit unlock can be used on unit X for one version then used on unit Y for the next version and so on

I'm gonna be really thick and ask you to explain that a bit better..........It might just be I've had too much beer...................but then again........
