Can someone tell me the size for the large nut under the front plastic cover for the alternator drive pulley.....TA
2007 1200 GS

Thanks santa 2512 the largest socket/spanner i have is 30mm and the nut is larger than that.

That's what I guessed....just put the bike in top and rotate the rear wheel...take spark plugs out to make it easier.

Oneplus 2 = my phone

To turn engine park on centre stand, put in top and take the spark plugs out.
To remove the timing gear for changing oil seal.
Park on side stand with gearbox in top gear and back wheel chocked. Use a breaker bar on socket. Weight of bike on its wheels moves the front shock bottom end outwards just enough to make space for a socket spanner & handle.
Press rear brake to stop wheel turning while pulling the breaker bar.
Reassembly needs a torque wrench. Same technique.

Sent somehow.

While the alternator belt cover is off check for corrosion around screw threads. Also where the plastic edge has rubbed through the cover paint.
I filed the fine lip off the plastic cover joint face and put washers under the three screws. This stops the plastic fretting against the paint.

On later bikes 11-12 a 1 5/16" ( 33.33 mm) is a snug fit.
On early bikes 05 06 i have had to use a 34 mm socket.
I much prefer to turn the bike over by the crank nut as it also provides an opportunity to check the alternator belt etc.
