I'm off for up to a month or so and have been advised to take the following spares, the bike is a 2000 1150GS:-

Hall Sensor (used is fine)
TPS (used is fine)
Final drive bearing and seal (New)
Alternator belt (New)

I got some prices off the net, but am just wondering if anybody's got any of the above for sale before I buy?

cheers
Millard

I have all the above spares (albeit for an 1100) but I'm away on a few trips myself and will be taking them with me :)

However, you may find someone who maybe has them but won't be using them and is prepared to lend you them on a 'sale or return' basis?...

For things like the alternator belt, I'd buy a new one, fit it and take the old one as a spare (assuming its in a fit condition). And when you fit it, only use the tools you'll be taking with you - it'll help highlight any missing items in your kit. You won't need it for the alternator belt but make sure you have the correct socket for the crankshaft pulley nut - its an oddball size that usually isn't included in standard socket sets and you can't fit the hall sensor plate without it. If you're taking a tps sensor, make sure you take a multimeter and know how to meter for the correct reading - again, have a go using the stuff you'll be taking with you - metering the tps will probably lead you to make sure you have a couple of dressmaking pins with you...

Modern smartphones are great - I've got the complete factory manual and a load of other useful workshop type articles on mine (like steptoe's 'changing your big bearing at the side of the road' from ADV). Hopefully they'll never be needed but you never know...

Apologies if this is teaching my grandmother about sucking eggs ;)

If you're so concerned about the originals - then replace them before you go, in the comfort of your own home.

"Final drive bearing and seal (New)"

Bearing FAG 61917.C3
Buy from a BMW dealer. Best price usually. At least for the bearing.

You can also use a 85x110x10 NBR seal from your nearest industrial seal shop.

Appreciate your replies so far :thumb

The Hall Sensor and Alt belt will likely be done before the trip, the bearing and TPS will be carried as spares along with whatever need to change them.

I'll take either a net-book or iPad, haven't made up my mind yet, and I've got the manuals downloaded to both.

TPS now sourced from a site member.

I'll get the Bearing/Seal and Alt belt as advised above, still looking for a 2nd hand Hall Sensor please

If you're going to fit a hall sensor before you go then I'd fit a new one - probably little point in fitting a second hand one as you've no idea if it's any more likely to fail than your own :nenau

I went through the same thought process a couple of years ago and ended up biting the bullet and buying / fitting a new one (along with an alternator belt and full set of cables). The old 'known working' hall sensor plate, belt and cables now come away on long trips as insurance.

If you are quick there is a Hall Sensor on Ebay item number 111028773749

Hope this helps.

You can also get them new from Greece for a fair price item number 111028079818
