spark plugs

Just been up the road to get some new sparks for the bike and my local parts shop only had NGKs with a heat level of 6 isntead of the 7 fitted.

Now not being a spark plug connesuir I couldnt be sure if these were ok but the guy assured me it wouldnt matter.

So I fitted them as they seemed to run fine.

I adjusted my valve clearances and balances the carbs and all seems hunky dory.

Just wondering if anybody would say there is anything wrong with a different heat rating on the plugs?

My understanding is that the spark is a little better with these plugs.

the plugs you need to run are 7 or 8, not 6. The 6 is far too hot a plug to run.
I presume yours is a twin spark, if so you should be running BKR7EKC or DCPR8EKC depending on what model year

The letters mean a lot.
BKR means 14mm thread dia. with hex size 5/8" projected tip with resistor
EKC means 19mm thread reach, 2 ground electrodes with low angle
DCPR means 12mm thread dia, hex size 5/8" with projected insulator and resistor

You will find on short journeies the 6 plug will be ok, if all the other specs are ok, but will break down on hotter longer runs
 
from my 2 stroke days if you ran the engine hard (as god intended) then you ran a harder/cooler plug if you ran a hotter/softer plug you would hole a piston i think on a 4 stroke you will increase the chance of pinking under load and worse case hole a piston using a hotter/softer plug but i could be wrong (usally am)

ok, ill take the plugs back and scream off at the fools that told me they would be ok. Ive not ridden the bike with them in but I did balance the carbs.

Regarding manuals, I consult the internet as I usually find that in some conditions manuals are great but sometime there are optimised ways around doing things. This site is a great example.

only difference between a hot plug and a cold one is the area of central insulator touching the outer body.
thus a cool plug gets rid of more heat, as there is greater heat transference to the head, so running cooler. using too hot a plug might cause detonation.

fit the right ones.
 
Took the plugs back today for a refund. They were a bit dirrrrrrrty on the end as I had balanced the carbs with them in but after a bit of argueing they agreed to take them back. I then realised I had gone about £3 of diesel out of my way to get a £6 refund. :(

Still, principle and all that.

So.... my next question is.... will I need to re balance the carbs when I get my new plugs in?

No I wouldn't Rebalance your Carbs. The Plugs all comes down to the Heat Range. Not Fuel Mixture from carbs. If your carbs are Running that lean to Burn Holes in the Pistons? Well Your Stuffed ' Me- Ol Chook '// Yes of Course retune, but I doubt that?
Now listen this is what I do. Compare you Tank Mileage on a Normal Run. I always run a log this way when my Fuel usage is up, with normal use? Time to do something. Yes my R80 and 100 Plugs. My newer (Oil Head) 1100 valves. Othertwise leave it alone.
