SPC. crap! o yes!!

Little Arithmetic

Don't like them? Go elsewhere. Vote with your wallet. But do be reasonable with them. If they screw up, explain how unhappy you are and why. Give them a chance to put it right - everyone gets it wrong sometimes.

There was an earlier post or two about dealers making excessive profits on a Valkyrie. Someone quoted a resale price of £6000 after a trade-in price of £4300 makes £1700 profit. Not really. The dealer will have been forced to add VAT to the net price. I make it a sale price of approx. £5106 plus VAT of £894, meaning the gross profit comes in at £806 - a markup of 20%.

Is 20% markup too much? I don't work in the 'motor trade', so I've no idea. Anyone out there in the business and got an opinion?

Vat is payable between the buy in price and the final selling price. So any warranty or remedial work costs do not reduce that Vat liability.

What is "klipbokkop"

Finesse
Did they not tell you when you did the course?

klip - stone
bok - antelope
kop - head

Stone head antelope if you would like a translation would be closest to the afrikaans version:D

I see they do various off road events in South-Africa so hence the question whether you slipped off the bike at any point?

Interesting events they have like team building, management meetings  Sometimes I wonder why I swopped a well paid travelling job for a programming job:confused:

Just my two penneth, any retailer can reclaim the VAT on warranty parts used and the labour etc. cost obviously is Tax Deductable. Another Myth of the Motor Trade is that workshops are a loss making department compared to Parts and Sales. Parts and Sales would do a lot less, in fact probably not exist without Workshops, which, if run effectively and professionally can more than cover their cost's. Just a sad fact of life that Sales Orientated people obviously have more Gift of the Gab (Gob :D ) than mechanical wizards. It comes down to the Sum of the Whole and usually reflects on the CEO or whatever management structure is in place. Not that I am an expert but my opinion comes from about forty years in and around the retail motor industry, from apprentice through management and owning my own small businesses.
Sadly, due to a combination of age, retirement and senile dementia, all that I can cope with now are couple of days now and then as a Hairy A****d Truck driver to augment my meagre pension (put yer money in Property, NOT pensions  ) in order to finance my Toys. ;)
Your ever obedient servant and avid Lurker.

Whilst in SPC I spoke to a guy who had just bought GS1200, I commented on how poor the lights are on my GS1150. He wasn't sure as he didn't ride much at night, I said "look no bias I'll ask this salesman." an ANONYMOUS salesman hove into view who promptly stated that there is nothing wrong with the lights if adjusted correctly.

NO FURTHER COMMENT FELT NECESSARY

I'm not quite sure what you expected him to say... He's being paid by them for crying out loud! If the lights are as bad as you say then why resort to asking a salesperson to back you up anyway. Don't you have confidence in your own judgement?

Are SPC really bad just because one salesman won't help you criticise a particular aspect of your BMW? I don't think so...

who would ask for a truthful response from any salesman, ever - let alone a product they were trying to sell.

There is NO VAT liability. The seller, being a private individual cannot charge VAT so the buyer, dealer, cannot claim back any VAT. This is why most second hand vehicles have no VAT. The original figures are buy the bike for £4300 sell for £6000 profit of 28% on sale, not mark up. When talking profit, you should always discuss profit on sale not on cost. Out of his £1700 the dealer has to inspect the bike prior to sale and give a warranty and may even have to service the bike prior to resale, not necessarilly with this bike, but it is usually included in any negotiations. They also need to include for a little negotiation, if the buyer knocks them down a hundred or so the final margins are obviously not that good.

The dealer DOES have to pay VAT on the margin. eg dealer buys for £5000 and sells for £6175. Delaer has to pay £175 VAT. (Second Hand Margin Scheme).

Tanx for that Paul, I stand corrected. I always thought that second hand machines were VAT expempt, ah well you learn something everyday:thumb

A comment on my experience of SPC and their staff. Overall I've found them helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Their service staff, and Les, the service manager, in particular, have been very good. The facilities whilst waiting are excellent, with satellite widescreen TV, excellent coffee and internet access. What more do you want?! I admit Bob Simpson is a little odd but he gave me a good deal and has been very professional. I don't want him to be my mate just honest and fair overall.
I drive 200+ miles to get there so it must be worth it. So far it is, but this may change for logistical reasons if not service reasons.

SHAME!

Hey Nick.... where have you been ? I posted a thread about you asking where you had gone. I miss the selection of good items for sale. Will you be back ?

Regards,

Luke

i`ve been here all the time

luke, not gone anywhere, saving up for my next GS. or 1200st or rocket 111 etc. etc.etc.

I've found almost all the staff at SPC very helpful, except for the midget. His attitude comes off him like an aroma .. and a nasty aroma at that.

And I'd second that praise for Les in the workshop, and Steve as well. Both top guys, helpful to a fault.

I was having difficulty gettting the rear seat to lock on to the bike, went up one Saturday morning. The place wa sheaving with people, but Les heard me asking at the service desk, came over, went to look att he bike, took the seat and fitted some little washer things and everything was fixed. OK, it only took 10-15 mins, but they could have charged for that, or had me fill in forms for a warranty claim.

Blackburnlee,

Just wanted an honest opinion from the guy to show the bloke I was with that BMs aren't great at everything. Where did I say that SPC are bad?

If I don't get the truth from someone I vote with my feet the next time I buy. I've dealt with salesmen who speak the truth about their products, and I would rather know the truth beforehand.

Eliminator,

Fair enough about voting with your feet. I'd do (And have done) the same however no salespersons I've ever come across have been that candid about their products. Like I said BMW/SPC is paying their salary...

Perhaps I've not been as fortunate as you have when dealing with shop staff.
