Speed Limits in Turkey

It's recently been announced that speed limits on main roads / dual carriageways outside of Turkish cities, has been increased from 90km/h to 110km/h. Motorcycle limits have usually been lower than for cars and I've not yet found out if they've now been equalised, I'll post here again once I know.

Not yet it hasn't. Got pulled over on a dual-carriageway the other day doing 104kph. Very pleasant police but nevertheless fined me. I had a look at their document which said max 99kph!!!

If you find any different let me know and I'll try for a refund

It has for cars, but motorcycle limits have always been lower, perhaps 99km/h is the new one....it used to be 80km/h, or thereabouts.

On the dual carriageways is 90 for motorcycles;
In the highways its 100....

But what about the mobile ones, with the little Radar warning triangles on the side of the road? Do I still have to keep one eye there and one on whichever driver is trying to kill me at that moment?

I have heard rumours about mobile radars but never seen one !

Surely you must have seen police cars parked on road sides, and noticed the small triangular Radar warning signs?

There's always one on the road leaving from Bandirma, heading toward Susurluk.

In regulations, Police MUST put that small triangular radar warning signs... but... what'll happen if you can't notice that sign?

Are you sitting comfortably? Now pay attention. I was pulled in today at a radar trap at Baskale in the east. Fortunately this time I was under the limit. Either that or the officer has an 1150GSA in Istanbul and was being kind, but I think not.

I took the trouble to ask him what the speed limits were. His response was the same as my previous informant. Now get this:

On single carriageways the speed limit is under 89kph and on dual-carriageways it is under 99kph.Which means if you do 89 or 99kph you break the law. 88 and 98kph are fine!!!.

In regulations, Police MUST put that small triangular radar warning signs... but... what'll happen if you can't notice that sign?

The warning signs are small and usually placed as far to the right of the edge of the road as possible, probably to stop drivers from seeing them and ensuring more get caught. It was much worse when it was easier for the police to take bribes, then the signs were all but hidden.

It was officially announced in the gazette (a paper that prints all new laws) a few weeks ago, that on all roads connecting major towns and cities (mostly dual carriageways) the car limit is now 110km/h, I wasn't able to find the new limit for bikes.....but this might well be that which the policeman quoted to you.

There was much consternation when the new limits were introduced, because although well publicised in the media, the police seem to have not been told.

The first guy I spoke to showed me his current list and it reflected what I said above. But you're right, whether the list reflects the new legislation is another matter. Any further news I would be interested.

Please also note that you have an extra safety margin of 10% over the posted speed limit for overtaking.

............but on occasions that's not enough, especially with car mounted radar travelling in the opposite direction (alledgedly ).

Hi all, I rode back last year through Turkey from the Middle East and was given a ticket. I did not pay it as the police could not decide between themselves what the speed limit was. I was doing 100kph and was fined for doing above 90kph when the sheet they showed me showed 110kph. We argued but he still issued the fine. I went through customs and decided not to complicate things by showing the fine paperwork.
