on the trip into work this morning the speedo stopped working and I had to judge my speed with the rev counter - I've estimated 50 mph = 3000 revs in 5th gear, 40 mph = 2500revs, 30 = 2000 revs, can anyone confirm and give us the revs for the same speeds in 4th gear for my r1100gs so I can keep my license on the way home from London to Hastings

thanks in advance

Jeff

Well, I'll have a go but I can only guarantee the figures for the "E" box . . .

The ratios for the "E" box are, per 1,000 revs.
1st = 7mph
2nd = 9mph
3rd = 12mph
4th = 14mph
5th = 16mph
E = 21mph

So, if you're doing 5,000 revs, that'll be 60mph in 3rd, 70mph in 4th, 80mph in 5th, and 105mph in "E".
Theoretically, then, at redline of 7,500 revs you should be able to do 158mph but you can't because the bike won't rev out in "E" much beyond 6,500 revs. Redline in 5th is 120mph

The ratios for the sports box are the same as above (I believe) but 6th = 18mph. This gives a theoretical top speed at 7,500 revs of 135mph which is easily reached. In actual fact then, top speed is about 135mph for both boxes (but the theoretical limit for the "E" box is higher).

Your 1100GS will have slightly higher mph per 1000 revs because the gears are further apart. 5th gear on the 1100GS is higher than 5th gear on the 1150. This is the reason people think that the 110GS is faster than the 1150GS. It's not. It's just the different gearing and the way the bike is ridden. Anyway . . .

1150GS:
3rd gear - 2000rpm = 24mph; 2500rpm = 30mph; 3000rpm=36mph
1100GS:
err on the side of caution and keep below 2500 revs in 30mph zone.

1150GS:
4th gear - 2000rpm = 28mph; 2500rpm = 35pm; 3000rpm = 42mph; 4000rpm = 56pmh; 5000rpm = 70mph
1100GS:
I'd keep to 2500rpm in 40mph zones; 4000rpm in 60s; and well below 5000rpm in 70s

1150GS:
5th gear - 4000rpm = 64mph; 4500rpm = 72mph; 5000rpm = 80mph
1100GS:
I'd stick to below 4000rpm on any national limit roads where you think there might be cameras.

Hope this helps.

Re Speedo

Hi, Dont know if this will be of any help, I have a R1150R, and was studying how I could work out what gear I was in at a set speed/RPM, found that with my RPM at 3000, the gear is represented by the MPH, ie

At 3000 RPM 2nd gear shows 20MPH
3rd gear shows 30MPH
4th gear shows 40MPH

not an exact science but was pretty accurate -/+ a couple of miles.

If any of you experts think I have this wrong, let me know.
