Speedo not working

Hi, on the recommendation of a GS veteran I've ended up here - great site for a newbie like me. My question is - I've just become the (very) proud owner of a 2000 650GS and am loving it. However yesterday the speedo stopped working halfway through my journey. Should I take it in for a service (it was bought privately so I plan to do this anyway) or is it possible that the sensor is covered with crud from Irish roads and can't function?

I ride an F myselfes, and I think this http://www.f650.com/phpBB2/index.php is a good place for asking for help.
This site (UKGS'er) is nice, fun, good and I'm addictive too it!
And there are a lot of experts here for the big GS'ers, but if you are not getting help here for your baby GS - go to The Chain Gang. ...but please come back here and have fun!

yes check the speedo sensor and cable rear wheel.
get saving some euro's if you are going for dealer service.
have a good read round the sites and forums

Finn , as colt says its most likely the speedo sensor on the rear wheel ,i had the same fault and a new one cured it
