Find out if you're getting what you pay for in your broadband. Go to the website below and click on the yellow pyramid, or a blue one, to start the test.

At the end the result will be shown in the top left pane. The result is in kbs, so divide it by 1000 to get the true speed of your connection and see if you're really getting what you pay for

I've done it twice and get readings at 5194 kb/s. and 3526 kb/s
But I dont really know if thats good or bad?????

Paul

It varies at different times of the day depending on how many people are using.

However, it is a good idea to check because if you're paying for say 6 Mb/s and only getting 3, then you have a get out of your contract with your ISP as they're not providing what they've contracted to do.

5194Kb/s = 5.194 Mb/s which is not bad at all :thumb

(But not if you're paying for 10) :thumb

did you test it on the same locations each time, if not, there will be a bit of a difference. I just compared Dublin versus Cairo for example and the numbers were significant....:thumb

I just upgraded my Virgin media package to (up to)20meg. I tested my connection and was only getting 2meg.
My 6 year old modem needed replacing. Few days later postie knocked my door. New modem fitted and tried this test as well as about 5 others. The results varied massively between different sites! Best was 13, worst about 3.
Who knows which one is most accurate?

if it's adsl there will be no getting out of any contract (usually only a month anyway), as there are no Service Level Agreements on domestic lines.

it's unlikely to be the ISP's fault anyway, but down to BT's antiquated copper wires.

this speedtest seems quite good if you want to try an alternative.

i`ve got b.t. option one, download 3254 kb/s upload 368 kb/s is that good??

Sorry guys but non of these web based speed tests are worth poo.

You need to do a download from a good news group or similar and time it.

Especially with 20Mb broadband, these websites simply cannot feed you the data quick enough. They will give you an idea upto about 2Mb, after that put your finger in the air.

Also, some of the people on 20Mb broadband have PC's that are unable to cope. Check your CPU usage while doing the download, if its running at 100% chances are the PC is limiting your speed. Make sure you are free of spyware, proxy servers etc.

The route taken/location also makes a big difference depending upon rights and utilisation.

Despite what they say, providers do cap or 'manage' users at certain times or after certain usage is exceeded. Surf in the evening and download in the daytime:thumb

If your with Virgin you will need a model 255 or 256 modem on 20Mb to get good speeds.

+1:thumb......all ISP's are guilty of throttling bandwidth so don't get upset/excited with your test results.
