Spoiler for windscreen - BMW R 1200 GS Adventure

I am 5ft 10inch and I find that if I place my hand just above the windscreen of my 1200GSA I can reduce the wind noise dramatically. I am therefore thinking about buying the Touratech spoiler, shown below, and wondered if anyone has any experience of this item?

i think i might make one out of an old visor & gaffer tape.

I borrowed one to try out (R1200GS std screen). I found that it reduced wind noise but seemed to emphasise buffeting. It also made the screen wobble about.
You really need to borrow one before you spend that sort of money as you may be disappointed. It's all down to personal choice, but I certainly won't buy one. They are also easy to nick, even the locking ones.

Hi Storm, I use 1 on my GS12 & I'm about the same height - you're welcome to try it if you want, I'm in Farnham down the road from you - PM me if you want to arrange to meet, or I'll be at Alton cafe tonight.....I find it brill for faster riding & just stick it in the tank bag when in towns or offroad. Coupled with "winglets" it seems a vast improvement to me.

Yep. I had one on my 12GS. Seemed to make a big difference and kept my visor cleaner too. I'm 6'00"

:thumb2

i had one but sent it back. it did tip the wind over me but found it restricted my view of the road and i couldn't see the road surfaces ahead. i live in a slighty rural area and mud, gravel, wildlife and potholes are common on the roads i'm on and i didn't feel confident reading the road ahead.

Screen

Had one on my 1150, brilliant but in the rain no wind to blow the rain from the visor so took it of but could ride at high speed with visour up, (just to test not reccomended)

Something else

Something else to consider would be a Laminar Lip. I have one of these and at 6'3" it sends most of the wind blast above my helmet and I have zero buffeting. The Lips work a different way than simply adding height to the screen - it generates different air pressures that help to push the airflow above the head and smooths the airflow at the same time. Because of this the tip of the Lip is lower than the Touratech extention which helps with visibility. I also think it suits the screen better.

I have no connection with Laminar Lip and can only testify how it works for me. I also have one on my K1100RS and that stops the buffeting on that too although its a lower screen so I still get some air pressure on the shoulder/head area on the K.

Is the Laminar Lip available in the UK? Or can you order it direct from the states without any hassle. It is the sort of thing i have been looking for, is it easy to fit, any drilling necessary? I am reasonably handy but no wizzo.

Thanks

Try Heroblobs.co.uk

It probably comes with 4 x 3M ultra strong velcro pads to stick it to the screen. The advantage then is that it can easily be taken on and off but felt this may cause issues long term. I decided to drill and bolt mine to the ADV screen (best done soberly and with steady hands). Heroblobs will supply with plastic nuts & bolts foc if you ask them.

I would suggest you experiment with positioning first by using strong tape to fix it and finding out what works best for you before you commit to drilling any holes.

Yep - I got mine from Heroblobs.co.uk.
It's not difficult to fit, but you'll probably need two people to do the "locate-and-stick" exercise to align it as you want; they're secured by adhesive, although bolts are, apparently, available. I did ask BVM to take a look at drilling through to secure mine permanently, but they refused due to the risk of the screen cracking.

My first screen which I drilled had to be replaced due to cracking but that wasn't caused by the Laminar Lip and it was replaced under warranty no quibles by Bahnstormer. I have drilled my new screen and put another 3K miles on since then and no cracking. The way to do it is get the Laminar Lip positioned by using the the velcro pads and then with it in position drill through the Lip, velcro and then the screen in one go. You do stop breathing while you do it but afterwards wonder what the worrying was all about. However, if you screw it up don't blame me!

Thanks for the advice guys, i will do some experimenting first to get the best position! Do about 95 miles a day so any thing that makes it a bit quieter has to be tried!!

I bought one of these and it didn't really work for me, although I understand that it works for others. I am a bit taller at 6'4" and although it moved the buffeting higher, it still hit the top of my helmet. A taller Cee Bailey's screen did the trick, purchased used from this site.

I would agree that I'm probably at the upper limit at my height. I still get a bit of air flow (but no buffeting) right on the top of my helmet. If I leave my visor open, it automatically closes it when I hit 90mph!:augie
