Spooler sucking up cpu time on XP

Noticed the pc was running slow and discovered a program spoolsv.exe is taking about 90+% of cpu. According to Microsoft it is part of the printing process. I've nothing in the print Q and no printers running. PC is set to autoupdate from microsoft so I should have all the latest patches. If I kill the process it restarts automatically after a few minutes. Antivirus is also up todate and says I'm clean.

Any ideas?
