Been out today for a spin on the R100 GS (1990). When I first started the bike there was a metallic squeaky noise coming from the front cover., not mad squeaky but noticeable. It disappeared as the bike warmed up. When I got back I removed the front engine cover and it defo seems to be coming from in there somewhere. I couldn't find anything loose, and all looked in order........any suggestions?

Alternator belt tight enough?

Either that or alternator bearings, but the belt being loose or a bit wet makes what could be describes as a metallic squealing noise if too loose or worn out.

Is this not the Airhead section...?

It is.

I know fekk all specifically related to airheads, but I'd suspect the same or similar on any vehicle with an alternator up front. :nenau

If I'm totally wrong, by all means take the piss, but if a mate brought round an airhead with the same problem, that's where I'd look initially, even if it turns out it wasn't physically possible for that to be the problem given the specific bike.

Or was that a jibe because you know I'm not an airhead person :nenau

:shoot:

Fecking useless southern Jessie.

The alternators are mounted on the crank. Belt drives are for bikes where things don't quite fit.

Alternator is driven of the front of the crankshaft so no drive belt or bearings. My guess is possibly alternator brushes may be worn.

Fair enough :)

Was only trying to help, until the Northern Monkeys roused themselves :augie

Since Nobody except people from Doncaster know or care where it is I don't think Redricks opinion counts for anything.

It's an airhead, so the squeaking noise will be your hip :rob

I'm from the North…

Is it a mouse?
