Hi,

Has anyone fitted stainless braided brake hoses, using just two lines on the front brakes, ie double banjo bolt on the master cylinder, then two seperate lines one each down to each caliper. Thinking of doing this mod, just wondered if there are any pit falls, seems it would do away with lots of joints, bike is a 1150 twin spark without ABS.

Loz did it a while ago, but i seem to remember he had some problems with the lever coming back to the bars. Thats all i can remember :nenau

no, but cant see why it wont work, its how I was thinking of doing my own, let me know how you get on :thumb2

done it on other bikes, no reason for the lever to be softer,(loz)
hydrolic oil doesnt compress, (brake fluid)
so run it in any way you choose

braided hoses

hello seefour,

i have a 2001 1150 gs [non abs] that i have fitted braided hoses to.

the way i did it was to remove all the original pipework,

run a single hose from the master cyl to the right hand caliper,

run a link hose to the left hand caliper from the right hand caliper using a double banjo on the r/h caliper.

i used stainless fittings and also covered the hoses in black heatshrink.

also fitted a bleed nipple in place of the odd adaptor,so each caliper now has a bleed nipple.

you can use some of the original clips to keep the hoses tidy.

run the caliper link hose across the mudguard next to the mudguard mounting plate, drill two small holes and use a small tie-wrap to secure the hose to the mudguard.

need to be accurate in the length of the hose from the m/cyl to the caliper,
too long and it will kink under full suspension travel.

hope this is of use to you,

pm me with some contact details and i will send you some pictures if you get stuck.

ian.

Thanks Ian, will take your advice, off to see a man who can later in the week to get said hoses made up, will feedback if i have any problems, thanks again for the info.

I've had s/s lines for several years; a double banjo on the master cylinder and a separate line to each caliper. The lines are ziptied to the right hand fork, the line to the left hand caliper then runs over the mudguard next to the bridge. Simple and works well.

David,

Did you have any problems you can recall when bleeding the brakes, thought i might put bleed nipples into the caliper banjo bolts just to help.

Any photos?

If anyone has any photos of this set up I'd be interested to see them. I am thinking of ditching the servo/abs set up and going for the simpler braided hose option - will certainly do so if the servo packs in. Does the set up described in this thread eliminate the BMW connector that is attached to the headstock? I only ask as I have a modded GS with R1150R oil coolers fitted under a Touratech ReVamp tank and the right hand oil cooler sits just in front of this oil line connector. It's not a big issue but I have insulated the oil line by cable tying some split oil pipe around it just in case the oil cooler gets a bit hot - although this area gets a bit hot anyway when the bike has been running. Also it would be aesthetically more pleasing if the line could be re-routed. I attach a photo to show you what I mean. A simpler braided brake line might look better and be easier to service. I know that it is possible to change the fluid in the servo on a DIY basis, but I am a bit nervous about doing it myself since it seems to involve a lot of faffing about. I had it done by a dealer - but the cost of my last service was off the Richter scale - next time I'll do it myself, use an independent or get rid of it.

Thanks,

Psyko

No problems with bleeding-bleed nipples not a bad idea though. I will try to post some pics of my setup but its not complicated! The lines just come down the forks.

Thank You

Thanks. When you have a moment, can you tell me whether you still use the BMW "splitter" attached to the headstock or do the hoses run up the forks and then go straight to the master cylinder? Having looked at my bike yesterday, I think the latter should be possible.

Cheers, :thumb

Yup there's just 2 lines from the master cylinder, each going direct to the caliper. it seemed easiest and gets rid of a lot of unnecessary stuff too!

Thanks

Thanks for the info: very useful and will tidy up my set-up a lot. Just need to take the plunge and junk the servo and ABS now . I'm planning on putting some new instruments on over the Summer (Acewell or Trailtech) and going for a lighter look - I might be able to sell the Servo to pay for the new bits :thumb

Cheers,

Psyko
