Starcom PTT push-to-talk

I'm just fitting my starcom kit, and it's not obvious from the manual.....

Do you have to hold the PTT button to talk , or just press it once, then talk?

Hold to talk.

They now do a very useful bracket that mounts the button right by your left thumb, very easy to use.

Well it's not all in the name in my opinion.... How do you know whether 'push to talk' means push (and hold) to talk OR push (and release) to talk?

Anyway... from the manual... it sounds like one push ( and release) would set the radio onto transmit, and until there was a period of a second's silence, the radio would continue to transmit?

But I haven't tried it yet cos didn't have any batts for the radio.

I was agreeing with you Willstat.

By standard a PTT is press and hold to transmitt, that said my experience of radio use does not extend to those mounted on motorbikes, and a press to start, press to stop might prove useful if you intend to transmitt for more than a few seconds at a time.

Sorry Eddy... and thanks, I knew you were agreeing with me. My answer was aimed at Swesty not you. As you and I agree... 'Push to talk' does not give a complete explanation does it?

Anyway... may test it tonight, and then I'll know!!

Here's what my Autocoms do.... There is a red button on the left handlebar with a small microswitch underneath.

With the microswitch in the middle, it's 'standard PTT operation' , namely you press the red button and the radio transmits whatever you say over the channel for as long as you hold the button pressed. No-one else can transmit while you hold that button down.

With the microswitch set to the right, it's 'Vox' operation, namely you have to say something to cause the intercom to open the channel for transmission and it will stay open as long as you're saying something at a high enough volume to keep the 'Vox' in effect.

With the microswitch set to the left, you open the channel for 'constant transmit', which is quite useful for CBTs (where you talk an awful lot in the beginning) and advanced demo 'commentary' rides, as you just set it and forget it.

I know yours is a Starcom, but 'PTT', 'Vox' and 'Constant talk' will almost certainly work in the same way if your unit has those facilities. The switches themselves may well be different.
