Starter Problems

Hi all,

One of us (not me) must have a solution to my problem.

I have a 2005 GS1150 Adventure and am in Mexico, about 2hrs north of Mexico City. I am working my way down to SA.

Over the last couple of days I have noticed that the starter would run on for a couple of seconds after the bike was running.

I thought that the shaft was gummed up (as they do) so I took off the starter, cleaned/re-lubed the shaft and put the starter back on the bike. On the first try the starter continued to run!! I killed the bike and quickly removed th hot lead to the starter (this was the only way to stop it).

A friend of mine found this on another GS forum:

“Basically the path is this: Press the starter button this supplies 12v to the starter relay, which energizes closing it’s contacts which in turn supply 12v to the starter solenoid which energizes pushing the starter pinion into place and closing the starter motor contacts which are supplied 12v from the battery/alternator, the starter spins up the engine which starts, you let go of the starter button and this de-energizes the starter relay which opens it’s contacts de-energizing the starter solenoid, which then using spring power to return the starter pinion to it’s resting position which also opens the starter motor contacts, so de-energizing the starter motor.”

Its sounds to me as if it could be:

1. The starter relay
2. The starter solenoid
3. The starter motor contacts
4. ????

I am stuck in Mexico with very little Spanish. I have very little knowledge on electrical matters but can fix most things mechanical. I don’t want to order a new starter if the problem is a simple fix. I know where there is a good shop and I can find a translator. But first I need to know what needs to be replaced/fixed.

When you say 'continued to run' - could it be the pinion not disengaging freely? - are the teeth on the starter hooked or damaged?

If you turn off ignition and then back on again, does the starter come on? Can you swap the starter relay with one of the others to determine whether it is an electrical component?

if you take the fuse out to the fuel pump and press the starter so the engine cannot run but the starter will turn the engine over - does it disengage / and effectively stop when you release the starter button?

Steptoe will be along shortly no doubt with the correct diagnostic route.

Hi Kevin;bit of a PITA for you.Check out the above thread.One of the guys on here had a very similar problem and the question was asked "how does the starter work".There may be some useful info in there.
Not that it's going to help you,but my 1150 has just arrived in Texas for a trip across the US and there is a spare start relay packed in the boxes....
