Starting problem - R100 GS with 40mm Bings

Glad you got it sorted.

Would be interested in your findings on an upgraded charging system.

Cobby, It's always a pleasure to help you out. As I know you would do the same for me..

I do put a battery conditioner on my Odyssey battery to just to keep it sorted and the reading I have been doing of late tells me using a battery conditioner/trickle charger is better for the battery life and serviceability.

Moving on I changed my diode board to a Thunderchild after glowing reports from Dangerous Brother One of Chesterfield aka Mick db1. They are reasonably priced if a little fiddly to fit. However that said and IMO the Oddyssey is the best battery is the best swap I've done and this one is about 7-8 years old now having come off my GSA1150 before I sold it. There cranking longevity is unsurpassed.

The acid test now is leaving it all week to see if it starts up first time on Friday night when you get back..!!

The work we you did with Rob Farmer was also very useful and should tell us it's definitely worth always having a spare set of serviceable carbs that we can swap as well as a Dynacoil for the added oompf factor on kicking a high tension spark down the old HT Leads.

Look forward to hearing the next chapter after next Friday. We'll get it sorted eventually and one day you will say to me... this bike is a keeper instead of I'm selling this fecking thing. You can then compare it to your tigerrrrrrr

I've fitted one of EME's alternator set up on my PD - done 2 long european trips, plus lots of UK stuff, and been brilliant. Lights, heated grips, sat nav, even heated jacket all on together, and works a treat.
Not cheap, but better than having a diode board or rotor or VRegulator pack up on you, in darkest Romania !!

Have a look here -

And an Odessy (how do you spell that word ?) battery too of course.

Archie,
Last night I fitted new rubbers between the carburettor and cylinder; these were in bad condition, noted at Rob's. The new ones are a lot thinner wall and feel more positive.
Also new return springs on the chokes and double checked their operation.

I had put the battery on charge over night, something I've never done.

The bike started immediately.

PS. Auto Jumble this Sunday?
