Over the last couple of weeks my 89 GS has ben increasing difficult to start. My mechanic has cleaned out the starter motor and reckons it is fine(ordered new brushes anyway). With a brand new battery the starter is still very slow turning over until it gives up in about 30 seconds...It would appear that power is being drained very quickly and that little or no power is getting to the spark plugs...

Any ideas on likely causes.....

with thanks in advance

As Rob says - ensure all earth and + straps are clean and tight :thumb2

Fully charge the battery and immediately re-connect up and try to start the bike..if battery throws its hand in after 30 seconds then the new battery is a duff one ( it happens !! ).

After the 30 seconds measure the batteries voltage, if it doesn't recover fairly quickly, I'd guess you've either a faulty charger or faulty battery.
