Starting with a completeley flat battery

Evening all, long time no post so hello again (not been her since the Fazer Owners Club-Unoficial attack a couple of years ago, in fact).

Heading over to try and start a friends GS 1200, hasn't been run for over a year. He's just telling me it won't start, he can't remember if anything lights up when he switches it on.

Thinking battery may well be goosed but any tips or ideas for just getting it going from you old hands?I've never worked on a bike that you have to plug a laptop in to fix.

Hi Les,

If the battery was left connected then it will almost surely be ruined, so you will need a new one. Flat batterys cannot be started with jump leads in the conventional way but if left connected for a few hours will recover a flat battery and then allow the bike to start on the key after which the jump leads can be disconnected.

Thanks for that Gatesy, my thoughts exactly on the battery. Just to eliminate anything else would the battery from my Fazer 6 be enough to turn it over ? I know it probably wont slot in but if we connected it up I mean ?

I would think that any battery, car or bike, would be suitable, just be wary of those flying jump lead croc clips, the electronics on BMs are v sensitive to sparking and also v expensive.

Charge the battery up fully and try again.... Should do the job...

Also have you put new petrol in it?

In the end I took the battery off the Fazer and chucked it on the GS. Went first time, so there's his answer. New battery and he's away.

They look well expensive. Not convinced you have to spend that much on a battery. But thats his choice. I'll send him your link.

The 1100 / 1150 battery that's the same as the OEM one is only about £60. Much cheaper electrons in the oilheads

eeeerm....maybe I'm not used to your forum lads, but is ther a "what battery should I get" sticky anywhere ? I've searched but can't find one.
