Can anyone tell me how long it's likely to take to ride from Stavanger to Stockholm, two-up at a leisurely pace?
Also, does the ferry from Stockholm to Tallinn still run? Seemed to be having troube on the internet- said it didn't run any more.
Thanks, Gav:)

I dont know about stavanger but gothenburg/stockholm is easily do able in one day if you must but a couple of days is much better.sweden is a big place! The ferries across to tallin certainly should be running. I will be shocked if they arent. They are excelent modern boats. They are a bit hard to book in advance and dont have a facility to take money over the internet (at least i couldnt sort it). I ended up faxing stuff to sweden . Its a bit of effort to book direct but worth it as its quite a bit cheaper. I think the company is called tallink. Going out you could risk just turning up at the port. From memory the boat goes every evening and theres likely to be a spare cabin and room for a bike. Coming back when timing may be more critical you should book (on your way out). Theres an alternative cheaper boat Kapelskar/paldiski which runs during the day but for my money the night boat is worth it, Its not much more than a night in a hotel in stockholm and you get an extra day. Stockholm is a must to visit for an while.Alternatively there are regular boats to finland from where you can ride round to tallin via st petersburg or get another ferry.Watch out for bandits though, I am told the road from finland to st petersburg is populated by some of russias least desirable citizens.(we didnt go that way and second hand stories are always more lurid)

When are you going gav? How much time have you got? Some loonies of here did the trip to talin coming back via calais in a week!:clap . Me and swmbo took a more leisurly 2 weeks going the other way round coming back via gothenburg. Its a shame the gothenburg boat isnt running anymore.

Just looked on rac route planner, stavanger/stockholm is 650 miles. Better make it 2 days, 250 first day and 400 on the easier swedish roads!

Hi Spot.

Thanks for the reply.

If the boat to Gothenberg was still running I would have taken this route- I've done it in two days before in the opposite direction.

You say 650 miles for Stavanger to Stockholm. If that's right, judging by the map, I'd say that more than 250 miles of it is in Norway. I've ridden in Norway and it can be very slow going at times. This is why I thought I'd ask rather than just going by the mileage. I'm planning to be away for about 4 weeks, visiting Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania and passing through some other countries along the way. I don't want to be doing massive days on the bike and want the odd day off the bike as well.

Maybe Liv will know what the roads are like between Stavanger and Oslo.:)

Cheers

Company is called Tallink, you can look at www.tallink.ee but it's only in estonian language. Ferries run once every day.

Oops; I'm getting slow!:o

Well, most riders do Stavanger-Oslo in one day, but a slow sissy like me need a little more time.
The main road are OK; the slowest part in Norway are where the fjords are deepest and all the camper-people are looking up at mountains whilst driving... Yes, it can be a pain in the a**e.

But the main road from Stavanger to Oslo are not just boring, so make time for the good parts too!
:) Liv.
