A steering damper can also help with damping out handlebar movements in fast corners on bikes with wide handlebars as you move around or off the bike. I had one on my KTM Supermoto for that exact reason. If you just sit there like a lump and don't move perhaps it is not an issue. If you like to push the bike a bit into corners I can see it being an asset.
Without wishing to cause any controversy, the 1200 does flap the bars a fair bit on some of the roads up here in the frozen north. Set it away really hard and even in 3rd and 4th it skips about a bit. I am sure Metal Man will agree, cos his was doing the same on a rather "spirited" ride down a bumpy bit of the Dales. I dont think a steering damper is called for, but I could understand someone thinking they might need it. But that was under hard acceleration, once you pitched it into a corner it was OK, no bar shake
I don't think it's the steering gometry of the GS that causes the shakes I think it's a combination of the screen, panniers if fitted a the tread pattern on the OE tyres. I might try some Bridgestone 012 next unless anyone knows better
Teestar, if you would like a really nice "Mr Toby" s/ damper i have
one. Last lightly used on a 96 Blade for only a month. Been on my garage shelf since. £30 PM if interested.
