Hoping to go over the stelvio on 3rd June. I remember it being open in late May a year or two ago, so hope it's open by then. One or two cars up there yesterday, but I suppose they're on 'official' business. A bit of snow this time of year tends to melt pretty quickly.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed

Definitely open . Rode up it last Thursday 7th June

Flying off Thursday, hiring a 1200GS and hoping to do this pass. Wondering how cold it was AlexG? Considering, no lining in the jacket, but extra clothing as layers to compensate. All to save on the luggage. What you think?

Only coldish at the top . I did not have my liner in and it was not a problem . The weather can change very quickly though .

Has anyone done the Mortirolo Pass? It's south of Gavia and links the ss42 to the ss38. Apparently a small but very interesting pass. Planning to do it as part of a trip starting next Tuesday, but not sure if it will end up being a dusty cart track or not

YOO

Yep, been there :P

A very tiny road going very steep up the mountain, on the top there's nog really much to see, and you end up on some kind of a platteau, where you can descend either towards Aprica or Edolo, or back to Tirano.

You've got to go up coming from Mazzo di Valtellina, that's the side the cyclists do in the Giro.

is that a recommendation or a statement of fact? the route i was planning takes us the other way over from Monno - Tovo Di Sant'Agata.

Did it from east to west a couple of years ago but can't remember if I came down to Mazzo di Valtellina or nearer Grosio. Last year I rode it west to east from Mazzo ... it's steep and narrow but pretty quiet :thumb

There's an odd memorial to Marco Pantani on one of the hairpins.
