....

But the Stelvio is totally within Italy

I was at Stevio last August. Fantastic pass and this is the view from the top. We stayed at the Hotel Enzian at Landeck, Austria (www.hotel-enzian.com) a motorcyclist-friendly hotel, and one of a chain of motorcyclist-friendly hotels in Austria (www.motorrad-hotel.com). Highly recommended.

Ian is of course correct. The Stelvio is entirely in Italy . That section of the pass shown in Paul's picture was shut about half way up due to landslides . We approached instead via the Umbrail pass and got to the top that way . By the Italian section I meant the route down from the ski station into Bormio.

True. Maybe they meant that it can also be reached from the town of Santa Maria in Münstertal in Switzerland. That road takes you over the Umbrail Pass which runs into the Stelvio road, just a few kilometers west of the Stelvio Pass.

BTW, for tarmac only riders, the road up to the Umbrail Pass consists of about 2.6 kilometers of gravel.

Not Henry, his horny girly...

H has already done the Stelvio and we'll be doing it together this year. Me on my Dakar - ooh mother!!!!

Note to self - must polish up my u-turns.

The Hotel Enzian was brilliant although the ride-out was a bit hairy. It was hard work keeping up with Mad Klaus on his KTM with us two on a heavy Pan, and some of the German riders don't seem to care about overtaking on blind bends, double white lines, and all.

We took the opportunity to rent the Triumph Tiger for the day also - a really nice, if tall, bike. Loads of poke.

The food at the hotel was good. Most of the guests were Germans who, these days, don't have a lot of money to spend. I think their country is feeling the pinch. On the ride out, whenever we stopped for breaks, we'd go into the cafe whilst they all stayed outside.

A dose of food poisoning buggered up one day - never eat cold mussels in a salad.

We couldn't really fault the place although should we return to Austria, we'd probably try one of the other hotels in the group. Apparently the Italian Dolomites are a 'must see'.

Tiger

Is this the tiger Paul?I was there also in July, but for one night only, just thought I would see what is was like as I had heard so many good things about these places.I found it to be fantastic, the food is excellent, the rooms and fittings are just top class, you actually feel like are in top class hotel, and thats just inside.Outside you have the facilities off the secure lock up,bike lift, jet wash, blah blah blah. Not the cheapest at £45 a night, but that was with as much food as a greedy person could possibly eat.Was it worth it?every penny IMHO hope to go back this year for a couple of days.Andy

Yup, that's the Tiger alright. A super bike but a bit too tall for my little legs. And went like the wind too. We rode up to the Kaunertal (2784m) to see the glacier.

Bike rental was about £27 a day.

A funny thing happened when on the Tiger. A few days earlier, about twenty or so riders rode through the customs post inti Switzerland - no stop checks, straight through. After coming down from the glacier we thought we'd go through again only this time we were stopped.

"Passports".
"Err, they're back at the hotel".
"You have no passports?!" Papers for the bike".
"Err, they're back there as well".
"It's an Austrian registered bike".
"Yes, we've rented it".
"...and you have no i/D or papers? Park your bike up and come into the office". At this point my daft wife couldn't stop laughing. I had to resort to producing my (expired) bestest I/D card in the World (You work it out). There was then laughter all around and I was told to go back to Austria. (Switzerland is not an EEC country so passports are required to be shown.

Yes, great hotel but we must try some others in the group - www.motorrad-hotel.com
