Stelvio Pass

That exactly why we went this last year (07) it is one of those 'must do's', not the best but I enjoyed it all the same and I have the crappy T shirt the same as I have a Timmelsjoch T shirt and a Jaufen Pass polo shirt and a Assen TT shirt 06, Assen WSB 05.07 etc etc

Enjoy it and take some pics

I did Stelvio the first week in September 2007 and it snowed but I would not change the experience for anything

It helped that everyone stayed at home because of the weather

I'm not really sure why the Stelvio is hyped as much as it is.

It's a great bit of road building, but, as roads go, it's NOT a great riding road.

Squirt, brake, turn; Squirt, brake, turn; Squirt, brake, turn; Squirt, brake, turn; repeat ad nauseum (literally).

I wouldn't discourage anybody from doing it once, but, having done it many years ago, I won't be rushing back.

And there was no restriction on coaches, trucks to access the shops at the top and of course motorhomes. All getting stuck on the hairpins and backing the traffic up for miles.....

I did the Stelvio Pass last June on a midweek day and it was still quite busy. I did hear though that the pass was shut less than two weeks later for a day or two because of snow fall.

The day I went up there the weather was stunning.

Its funny how everyone's picures are all taken from nearly the same spot!:D

I would agree that there are many better roads than the stelvio to ride, but it is still one of the "must do" roads and i recon I'd go back. I camped in Prato Allo Stelvio (I think thats how you spell it) The campsite was busy, but appeared to have a quiet area for tents, most that were owned by bikers. It had a pool too!

A few years ago we stayed at the motorcycle-friendly Hotel Enzian at Landeck in Austria so just had to ride up Stelvio. We were two up on a heavy Pan which wasn't the best bike for riding two-up up an extremely steep hill with 5mph hairpin bends. My problem, other than a fair bit of a lack of ability, was with right hand hairpins, when because of the sheer rock face on our right, I couldn't see oncoming traffic. This mean't I couldn't safely take a wide line into right hand hairpins. At one point I did take it a bit wider just to keep my speed up and came face-to-face with an oncoming camper van. With my short legs it was all I could do to hold the bike up on the steep camber. My wife had to get off in mid-road as I slipped the clutch and rode further up the hill. I found the whole ride scary but exillerating and were we glad to get to the top. We are returning to Austria in August and I'm not sure whether I want to return to Stelvio. The stretches of gravel on the decent weren't my cuppa tea either. Stick I got the sticker!
