Celebrity biker joins BikeFEST line up
A celebrity biker will be signing autographs and talking about his recent high speed crash where he believes protective clothing saved his life, at a specialist biker event this month.

Bikers are being invited to attend ‘BikeFEST’ on Sunday, August 22, when it returns to Stevenage following its success last year.

Last year over 2,000 people attended the event, which is organised by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and held at the Longfield Training and Development Centre in Stevenage.

This year organisers are proud to have a special celebrity guest; Isle of Man TT (Time Trial) Racer and all-round biking legend, Guy Martin. Guy will be at the event, signing autographs and talking about his recent experience when he crashed at 160 miles an hour during a race.

The full throttle motorcycle event, in aid of the Herts Air Ambulance, offers a range of stalls and demonstrations, including activities, such as off-road motocross and a slow speed control competition. Stunt rider, Sparky, will be giving demonstrations to show off his skills throughout the day.

Stevenage Crew Commander Mark Burgess, who is organising the event, said: “Last year’s event was a great success and this year it is looking to be even better, the entertainment is changing all the time and it includes local bands and DJs.

“BikeFEST is about bikers getting together and having a great day out with the opportunity to get some tips and advice about staying safe on the roads. There has been a huge interest in this event and I hope to see lots of people on the day to help raise much needed funds for such a brilliant cause.”

The Herts Air Ambulance will be operational from the event all day, giving people the unique opportunity of seeing the life-saving helicopter up close and a chance to meet the Air Crew.

Wendy Byland, Events Manager for Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust said: “We are delighted to be involved in delivering an event that promotes safer motorcycling. It is a great opportunity for motorcyclists to view the latest safety products and pick up some valuable safety tips along the way.

“The Air Ambulance regularly responds to incidents involving motorcycles and, as ever, we continue to be extremely grateful for the tremendous support we receive from the motorcycling community.”

Other highlights include; a fashion show showcasing the latest protective clothing available, rider safety stalls, a raffle, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service vehicles and fire safety demonstrations.

“This is a great opportunity for bikers to view the latest safety products available and pick up some valuable safety information,” said Keith Emsall, Executive Member for Community Safety and Culture.

"The purpose of the event is to have fun, but also to remind motorcyclists just how vulnerable they can be and what they can do to help protect themselves."

Bike Fest 2010 takes place from 10am to 4pm and is FREE to enter. To book a trade stand or for general enquiries call Wendy Byland on 0845 2417690 or email [email protected].

Notes for editors
The event is in aid of The Herts Air Ambulance.

The Herts Air Ambulance is a vital life-saving Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). It costs around £130,000 each month to cover all charitable costs and aircraft operations including the provision of doctors. The service enables clinicians and life-saving support equipment to be rushed to the scene of an incident and the patient can be flown to an appropriate hospital. The Herts Air Ambulance receives no National Lottery funding and is reliant upon donations from the public and local businesses to raise funds in order to keep the Air Ambulance flying.
