Hi,

I recently bought a 2011 1200GS after being bowled over with its handling. I tried a K (1300), tried an RT, but preferred the GS. Mind you, if I win the lottery a K would still be on my list.

Anyway, I am finding that when the engine is cold the gear change is quite stiff. I didn't have this problem with my previous bike, but I suppose it would be logical for the change to be somewhat stiffer when cold.

What are others experiences? Is it quite normal for this to happen?

Tks.

Is it still under warentee? It sounds like you might have a bit of a problem, maybe with clutch adjustment or the box has been filled with treacal instead of oil. Then again it could be you have stiff ankels in the morning :nenau :D

Get it to the dealer for advice.

My GS is new and the box is very sweet, in fact one of the smoothest of any bike i have owned!-----I hope it remains this way

I had a Triple Black loan bike with 1500 miles on it and the gearbox was super and so much quieter, slicker than my 07. Sounds like there might be a problem. CW did say that if gearboxes are sluggish there is a different type of oil they can put in it but it is V expensive. I didn't hang around to ask what it was because of those words "V. expensive".
Let us know how you get on.

Oil cores when cold which makes it thicker, and thus more difficult to shift. It's why aircraft have a minimum oil temp to start jets up :)

If it eases as it warms no worries, if it doesn't then take it in, having said that if in doubt and it's under warrantee take it in anyway although I'm sure you'll be fine, hope it's ok

Hi, my 2011 GSA has just had a 6k service, I was thinking of calling dealers to see if they had changed gear oil or done anything to stiffen up the lever, I had left my bike standing for a couple of days then took a 60 mile ride in the wet on Sunday, at the end of the journey the lever had returned to its 'normal' feel.
Strange.!

Thanks all. I do store the bike outside and it has been a bit cold of late, so maybe that's it. Nevertheless, I think I'll follow a number of people's advice and get it looked at by the dealer.

Cheers. :beerjug:

Mine is the same. Once warmed up all is fine. I assumed that it is due to cold oil making things tight and with a bit more wear and tear it would loosen.

Let me know what the dealer says...please.

If not greased the linkages can seize in time. There's a rod with a ball joint at each end. Wouldn't think it would be an issue with a newer bike, but might be worth checking. Certainly worth pulling apart and greasing when doing a service.
