That for your own PC to stay looged onto this site to tick the "remember me" box. This was a revelation to me, now can walk off, come back later, & I'm still logged on & do not have to re enter my password.

So moving on, how do I alter my internet connection to leave it connected all the time then ? I'm on Broadband, Orange. I get fed up with it going off line.:thedummy

It disconnects if it's inactive, so a prog that stays 'active' (even if it's not doing much) will keep it 'alive'.

Skype would do it....it constantly 'pings' the skype server to see who's online :thumb

Bill with skype it's worth bearing in mind that when you are online and skype is running in the background even though you may not be making a call the program still uses a prportion of your machines bandwidth. Apparently it's quite legal as it states it somewhere in the Skype EULA.

You should be o.k. with skype unless you've forwared a port on your router or allowed incoming access in your firewall. I think that's why the skype-me button here's always greyed out.

You can still get calls on the socket you make outbound through your firewall or router as it stays connected while skype is up, but can't handle other folks calls routing through your systems.

If you want to be online all the time, easiest thing is to get a router, then you can switch on NAT, and you don't need a firewall unless you suspect outgoing connections. You just connect via a (w)lan, rather than dialup networking client, and the router keeps you connected to orange.

Yup....it has to, to monitor who is or isn't online....

Not an issue though really....even with a relatively slow BB connection of 2mbs, you'll very rarely manage to connect to anything at that speed.....most of it is potential that's actually wasted

Even on multi-gigabyte downloads from direct servers/links, I can't see a drop in my bandwidth when using Skype.....in normal use, I run Skype, Gmail talk and ICQ and the average speed of a good sized torrent doesn't drop noticeably when they're all on.
