What's the concensus on back up data storage. I've had a couple of free standing drives failn so wondered if there's anything better.

What quantity are you talking. If not too much, have you thought of using the cloud ?
Looking into that as we speak. It's mainly photos. There's about 30Gb and rising.
Plenty of cloud storage available, for not a lot of money.
NAS drives are fine, but what about fire protection? Before Cloud storage, I advised my BIL to fit a NAS Drive in his garage (connected to house by car-port) so that business files wouldn't be lost in event of a house fire (for most scenarios).
Theft also - might be a consideration?
