Hey computer gurus....I`ve got a weird problem with my PC at home.

From my homepage (VirginMedia) I usually select 'Mail' then enter my email address and password....this then opens up my email Inbox.

However, since yesterday, when I enter the email address and password this is all I get on my screen........

Bizarrely, when I call up my homepage via a computer in work,I can access my emails okay.

I`ve done all the shutdown/restart/try with security suite switched off etc etc.

Any ideas as to what`s wrong ????????

Couldn't resist that one :D

That error is being served up from the server you are linking to so I would say it is their end........ but it's odd you can log on from work :nenau

Are you sure they hadn't temporarily fixed it when you happened to log on from work.... and now it's down again now you're home?

Hi Paul

It`s weird,isn`t it ?
No probs at all from work.....yet no go from home.

I wondered if some maintenance was going on,because when I opened it from work, the style of the Inbox is now totally different from how it used to be.
However,I`ve tried it from home at all kinds of day....and night...and very early morning...and got this message every time. :nenau

Internet Browser?

Seems to be a lot of similar problems related to Mozilla products. Which browser do you use at home/at work?

I`m using Internet Explorer both at home and at work.

Dunno what version of it.

i'm with virgin media and i'm not having any problems. i dowunload mail into outlook tho.

i got an email from them last week, seems they are upgrading the webmail so it may just be that :nenau

I`d go along with that theory if it wasn`t for the fact that I can access my accounts from work but not the same accounts from home.

Unless, somehow the main server from work has some kind of access that my home thingymabob hasn`t. :nenau

Cheers for the reply though :thumb2

Do both machines run the same release of the Java runtime?

Might be worth getting the latest for your home machine from Sun...

Hi John

Sorry...I haven`t the slightest idea of what you mean.:eek

Looks like I`ll have to contact Virgin Media as this problem has been on my home PC for three or four days now.

Maybe you have (at some time) installed Java on your home PC and this is being detected (to give a more functional Inbox) - and then it is failing - can't find any info on that error. Resin professional appears to be a Java based server product, so it may be failing their end due to a difference in your browser at home.

You can download and install Java runtime here - but I'm fairly sure that is a red herring?

Might be worth downloading Firefox - install that and see if you get same Emaikl problem at home.

Thanks again for the replies (even Motomartin`s.... :D ).

Well...the problem is still here.

I`ve tried Firefox.

I`ve deleted all recent updates.

I`ve tried with security off.

I`ve switched off and unplugged my modem..and my PC.

The problem is still there...across all my email accounts at home.

No probs when logging on at work.

I`ve just right clicked the error message and then clicked on 'View Source' which brought the message below.....do you reckon someone`s hacked into my PC or does it look kosha ??? :nenau

- Unfortunately, Microsoft has added a clever new
- "feature" to Internet Explorer. If the text in
- an error's message is "too small", specifically
- less than 512 bytes, Internet Explorer returns
- its own error message. Yes, you can turn that
- off, but *surprise* it's pretty tricky to find
- buried as a switch called "smart error
- messages" That means, of course, that many of
- Resin's error messages are censored by default.
- And, of course, you'll be shocked to learn that
- IIS always returns error messages that are long
- enough to make Internet Explorer happy. The
- workaround is pretty simple: pad the error
- message with a big comment to push it over the
- five hundred and twelve byte minimum. Of course,
- that's exactly what you're reading right now.

EH ?? That`s weird...there was a worded message after what you can see at the end of my post...but the wording is only visible if you go to edit or quote my post.....it won`t copy or paste. :nenau

Tarka why are you using the web mail version at home, why don't you set it up on the Virgin pop/smtp servers using outlook or windows mail:nenau

The extra message at the end is a HTML comment - so won't appear to be visible unless looking at "View Source".

This is a server error that is happening.
Why it only effects your home PC? I have no idea.

Outlook Express went to shite a few years ago, constantly asking for a password even after it was entered.

Therefore,I`ve just been clicking on 'Mail' on my homepage when I open Tinternet to access my emails.

I don`t know any other way of getting to it.

If you haven't already done so you could try going to the Virgin online 'My Account' (your account) and then change your account password there, then reconfigure your outlook express settings, the best way is just to delete the existing mail account, close and restart outlook express and re-enter your account settings with the new password.

Quite correct. Outlook is shite.

Try Thunderbird. It free and works well. Set that to get your Virgin Mail.
It will only need your userID, Password and the POP and SMTP server names...

Were you an NTLWorld or Blueyonder customer. Ether way its simple
pop.ntlworld.com / smtp.ntlworld.com
pop3.blueyonder.co.uk / smtp.blueyonder.co.uk

John

Thanks for the help guys.

It`s still faulty at home and accessible from work but I`ll take up Bill`s suggestion for now.

When I`ve got a day to waste I`ll try phoning the NTLWorld/Virgin Media 'helpline'. :augie
