Strange noise, any one know what it is?

I will confess to be new to owning a BMW so I am jumping at every little noise it makes, but this one is now consistent in how it occours.

When trundeling along at 30mph in 3rd gear, so the bike is doing 2500rpm(ish), if I roll on the throttle there is a 'plinking noise', thats the only way I can describe it. I can haapen in all gears from about those sort of revs.

I say plinking as it sounds like what my old carb'ed ZX6R use to do, if it I had to few revs, but I would feel that judder, the BMW does not. I don't think 30mph in 3rd is to few revs but I could be wrong.

I am going to go for a 2 for 1 here and see if any has any ideas about another issue, my idle speed can either be 1000rpm, or 1400rpm. There is no consistent conditions it just seems to settle at different speeds, it does not hunt around it is either one or the other.

Any help would be most welcome.

It is 2003 twin spark 1150gs, would you ride in 2nd at 30mph?

Pinking mate, mine does it, more so when hot? Try 98 RON unleaded, see how it goes.

The 1200 has 'knock sensors' to overcome this. If the sensor detects detonation (pinking), the BMSK knocks the spark timing back until it cant hear it, then advances it back up to the optimum, clever stuff eh!

No good to us though, ours dont have it!

I thought Mr Sherlock sorted that out? As we said the other night, must be a cable/splitter issue. The idle on our's CANNOT physically alter. On the 1200's there is a stepper motor which can actually do what yours is doing, but our's dont have it!!!

Think we need to have another 'fettle' matey

Mine can occasionally do it when hot too, not enough revs, too much throttle in too high a gear and there it goes, I use the better fuel when it occurs to me.

it can also do it if a primary coil is faulty, hows it running other than the pinking

That one I can rule out as they have just both been replaced.

But to answer your question it runs well apart from the pinking.

You haven't mentioned mileage or when it was last serviced

But once it's hot the idle shouldn't vary at all.

Is it running at idle on the throttle cables instead of the idle jets ?.
Usually happens when someone has read on the internet how to adjust throttle bodies or they attempt to do the 0-0 (zero zero) adjustment but they aren't really sure what they're doing.

Hi Steptoe,

the bike has done 40k, was serviced at 38K. It has had the fast idle cable replaced by the dealer I got it from, but it was doing this before and after the cable was replaced and the dealer did not change the idle when he did the cable.

Could it be electronic? TPS or Hall sensor maybe?

Lamba sensor

Right, took it back to the dealer today and they stuck it on the diagnostic wirlamagig thing, and low and verdict was, the lamba sensor is shot.

So says the dealer there is only one cure for this, you need one of these............

So there you have it, the smoke from the oil was fault for overfilling the bloody thing!

So I have the K, until next Friday when I can get back down there to pick the GS up.

That was the longest 95 miles I have ever done, it also hailed on me on the way home, just for good measure.

There is a definite procedure to check the oil level on these bikes or you will overfill them, with the engine at FULL operating temperature park the bike on the sidestand for at least ten minutes, pop it on the centrestand and check level,
If the motor is run for a short period all the oil will hide in the oil cooler and you will want to add more thus overfilling.
