Strange routing advice

On a recent trip from Brussels to Koln, my 2610 (v2008) tried to direct me north on the A44 after Aachen before coming south again on the A61, instead of simply carrying on due east along the perfectly good A4. I obviously ignored this advice despite the determined effort to get me to U turn at every possible junction on the A4 thereafter, including the junction with the A61, where it seemed to want me to get off and immediately back on again.

On my way home again, the unit quite happily plotted me along the A4, so I imagined it had discovered the error of its ways. Since being home however I have tried the same plot and, sure enough, going east the 2008 version still wants me to do the northern diversion of A44 and A61. Is this a Mapping fault or is it my machine?

I seem to get a similar problem on the M6 Toll road travelling north. The unit continues to ask me to U turn back to Birmingham right up to rejoining with the M6 proper. When you expect it, it isn't a problem, but it is very annoying.

Anybody else experience these problems?

What 'Avoids' have been ticked in the Setup?

Unpaved, U turn and car pool. The toll road one was the first thing I checked when I got the M6 toll problem but it was OK.

Bizarre! Try the same route with Mapsource, and zoom in loads just to make sure there's not a discontinuity in the road.

We've had similar discussions about routing anomalies in the past. Pan European - a Garmin Guru & unit tester - used to pass on these 'errors' direct to Garmin. 9/10 times, of course, it will be user error. However, I've produced similar examples though, usually, on switch-back roads in the hills. Sometimes, Mapsource (& the unit) interpreted the sharp turn as a u-turn which, off course, I had ticked as 'avoid.'

If you manage to get a sensible routing in Mapsource, then transfer to your 2610. Provided you are using the same map version - 2008 non-NT - there is no need for your 2610 to recalculate (if the auto-recalc has been switched off). It would be interesting to observe whether the route goes all peculiar when you ask it to recalculate.

You might also double-check that the 2610 is set to Fastest route.
