I was at a Horse Show in the grounds of Strathallan Castle today.

There was quite a lot of parachuting going on from the small airstrip and on the way out we passed the Strathallan Aircraft Museum - which seemed to be mobbed. There were a couple of light aircraft parked outside.

A quick 'google' shows the Museum to be shut and all the exhibits auctioned off :nenau

I know that the Scottish Parachuting Club operates from an adjacent site, but does anyone know if the Museum is still open and if so - is it worth visiting ?

It could be that the crowd was there to watch the parachuting.

Ta very much.

Bob.

I went to the museum in 1981,or was it 1982?on my gsx 250, and as far as i know it was to close that year.
no much help i know, but i was there.

It used to be good many years ago but since they closed, you'll find a lot of the exhibits at the museum of flight at East Fortune.

Hope that helps.

The Lancaster from the Strathallan was auctioned off as restoration to WW2 condition had just started.
moved South where a Hangar roof fell in upon it scrapping it :tears:spitfire
Another aircraft that should have been kept in the UK was this one :tears>>

I remember the Lanc arriving . . . .

I was sitting in the office in Edinburgh with the windows open (and a fine view of the Pentlands outside) when I heard the 'unmistakable' noise of four Merlins . . .

The silver Lancaster flew over the city and, I think, landed at Edinburgh Airport before continuing to Strathallan. That would have been around 1980 as I left that job in 1982.

I berlieve it flew over from Canada, where it had been used as a 'water bomber' to combat forest fires.

What a disaster - its akin to loosing that B29 that lay in Greenland for years, was restored to flying condition at huge expense, then caught fire whilst taxiiing to take off. It was on a frozen lake at the time - so its at the bottom now :blast.

When I was young . . ( :rob ) we lived near Watford, not far from Elstree Airodrome and Film Studios. . . .

I was home on holiday from boarding school when they were filming '633 squadron' - what a fantastic day that was - three Mosquitos and a couple of Spitfires flying around all day :bounce1

I have always been daft about aircraft and used to run "The Aeronautical Society" at school.

Unfortunately I failed to get into Cranwell in 1964 :tears

I now live next to Edinburgh Airport :thumb

I might take a 'nosey' over to Strathallan on a bike to see what's there. The crowd I saw must have been there to see something.

Lovely clip that, Proff :thumb

Interesting . . I always thought that the props contra-rotated - but these don't :nenau

Could an non-handed pair of engines/gearboxes have been fitted retrospectively ? (the lop-sided torque reaction wouldn't have been a problem in peace-time :D).

Morning Bob :D
The props on Merlin's rotated same way.
On later Hornets fitted with Griffin engines some had Contra propellers ala Shackleton.
Only plane I can really recollect having "handed" engines was the P38 with Allison V12's

Hi Proff,

Thanks, I knew the P38 Lightning had 'handed' engines and thought that the Mozzie had the same set-up. I recall seeing a TV programme about the P38s fighting the Japanese in the Pacific and how they were able to out-turn the Jap planes in either direction as they were'nt hampered by torque reaction.

I guess the torque reaction is less marked in a twin engine plane than it is in a single as the torque isn't acting along the centre line. The Mozzie must still turn to port quicker than to starboard though.

Interesting.

Bob.

More great clips, Proff.

Love that late 'pot-bellied' Mustang :thumb

What was the little radial-engined fighter ? At first I thought it was a Thunderbolt but it isn't big enough, must be a HellCat or something.

Did I hear the commentator right . . . "Glacier Girl" was retrieved from under 300' of ice and re-built ???

Awesome :bow :bow :bow

I have far too many interests (I always wanted to learn to fly and got as far as some 'hands-on' experience in gliders, but I was already fully committed in other areas and couldn't afford the time or money) :blast.

Yup she was rescued from an Icy grave, there was a documentary about the Lost Squadron on C5 about 3 years ago :) >>
