Changed the rear wheel bearings yesterday, right hand side one had water in and was totally knackered.

The only seal is on the bearing and is open to the elements ,in a recess that will hold water when its on the side stand,

A very poor design in my opinion .

Bearing made in South Korea:rolleyes:

Also , Had the negative battery cable connector brake in two (the battery end)
a few weeks go, this is the second time, check yours out, and fit a braided earth strap, available from Halfords.

This is a 2010 model with 6,000 miles on the clock

Check yours out before it lets you down, :thumb

If the bearing was made in South Korea...I'd have more more faith in the engineering quality of that than I would in the rest of the bike....speaking as a multiple Harley owner and enthusiast....:D:D

You ride your Harley in the rain?

Thanks for the tips, Elvisto.

Does your bike live in a garage or outside under a raincover ? I have a 2008 SB, and so far (touch wood) all OK.

Alex! My bike is garaged,

The bearing is recessed in the hub about 6mm so when the bikes on the side stand it holds a small amount of water,it tips out when you set off, but the damage may have started by then,

I've smeared some high melting point grease in there until i get the time to locate a suitable seal to fill the cavity,

I'll keep you posted on this mod.

I called into the Harley Davidson Dealer at lunchtime for a couple of items, and had a little whinge about the bearings,
Looked at the Street Bob 2012 and 2013 models , they've changed the design, the bearing is now flush with the end of the hub, and the spacer is large enough in diameter for the bearing to be hardly visible ,

I had a word with one of the mechanics, he told me they have a bike in with a collapsed bearing and its knackered the wheel.

Elvisto

Any chance you could post some pics of the problem area ?

Street Bobs don't change too much over the years... wonder if one could fit from a 2012 or 2013 model ?

Elvisto

Is it rain water or possibly water from washing or jet washing ?

Every model seems to have its quirks.

Hi Alex,

It has to be rain water, I wash it in a vertical position in one of those wheel chocks, and i never use a Jet Wash,

I had a call yesterday, HD may be giving me a refund on the parts, I'll keep you posted :thumb,

Cheers, Elvisto.

I'm taking the rear wheel off mine shortly, so will have a good look around.

Well!

Pleased to report , I've had a refund for my knackered rear wheel bearings,

Great result, :thumb

Sorry I've not taken that pic yet Alex, My son's borrowed my camera

No Worries, E.

Took the wheel out (what a job !!) but looks OK. Mine's a 2008.
