I fancy getting a GPS system and have seen a Street Pilot 111 Deluxe for sale, NEW, for £300.

That is way below the price I have seen elsewhere..£450 ish less.

What am I missing?

Too good to be true?

Advice please.

If you can get them at all, they are probably cheaper than £300 now, as they seem to be discontinued. I checked the Aspid site (where I bought mine from) and the SPIII isn't even listed anymore, but I still wouldn't be without mine, although these days they seem to have been overtaken in popularity. £450 sounds very expensive - I think I paid £350 for mine brand new, a year ago.

If you are looking on e-bay, read some of the threads on here first, eg this thread or you could buy a pup. I don't know if you can do a search (as you're not a sponsor) but if you can, search for "paneuropean" as an User name - that will keep you quiet for hours. ;)

The fact that it's obsolete technology that has been far surpassed by it's successors, and that the cheaper of those, the Garmin Quest, can be had for 20 quid more than this £300 SPIII.

Don't touch it with a barge pole....seriously!

Fanum is correct - there are many newer products from Garmin that are available for prices similar to what you have quoted, and these newer products would be a much wiser choice.

There are several problems associated with buying a very old piece of equipment such as the SP III. One is the condition of the backlight that illuminates the screen - that particular type of lighting technology tends to degrade over long periods of time (e.g. 5 years or so). The other is the matter of 'how current are the maps?' It's no bargain to buy a GPSR for a low price, then find out that the cartography is 4 or 5 years old, and thus grossly out of date.

Honest - forget about buying a SP III, have a look at what is available as current product - either 'new in box' current product, or 'gently used but still being sold as new elsewhere' current product. MAKE SURE you are aware of the version number (age) of the maps that come with the unit if you are buying a used unit. That is the number one oversight that people make - they buy a used unit, then find out that the maps are way out of date, and have to fork out a whole ton of money to purchase current maps. Total cost of an error like that is always greater than the cost of buying a new unit at a local retailer.

I bought a StreetPilot II last year on eBay for £180 and after leaving it in it's box since then, after a local GPS workshop, I thought I'd better get it installed. Judge noticed that the image was not as bright as perhaps it should be so I posted off to Garmin and they said it was fine. A friend has installed the latest maps on it, registered me with Garmin and I'm just awaiting the power leads to arrive to finally try it out.
