street pilot 3 maps not unlocking

i am experiencing problems with maps not unlocking in the gps unit .
it transfers ok to mwmory card .
can anyone offer any advice ?
i have used garmin v7 software for the 2610/2650 is this the problem ?

You need a 25 digit unlock code for each GPS that uses that copy of mapsource - You're allowed two units per copy for personal use.

How to obtain the code? There is a way using Garmin's somewhat arcane and labrynthine website..... I forgot to lay a trail of cyber-breadcrumbs to lead myself back there - I have a recollection the trek started at http://my.garmin.com .

The unit is my brothers and we have been using my UNLOCKED 2610 V7 software trying to upload the maps to his memory card for his streetpilot 3 whereas i use the 2610.
After loading the memory card we insert in his streetpilot 3 and it cant seem to read the card.
Does he need to sort out his own software and unlock code which he got with the GPS unit?
