hi all - hope someone can shed light on my Garmin arseing about?

Coming back from wales last weekend the unit kept saying map missing/data corrupted/screen freezing/dead slow and stop map drawing then locking up.

Should I chuck it in the bin with the biryani?

ISTR that the 2620 came in two versions - the earlier one which used a micro-drive which doesn't like vibration and therefore isn't suitable for motorcycle use and a later version which has a solid-state memory. If it's the earlier one you've got, it could well be the micro-drive which has failed...:nenau

aaaargh - so it could be the vibes of the bike upsetting the drive?
cheers. Ill try it in the car to see if it still causes problems.
Itseems to work fine for a little while then just goes to bits.
It did come with the proper bracket for the RAM mount etc.

Not long bought the thing off flea bay too... gutted.

Seeing as it'll be running, at the very latest, 2009 mapping data (that was the last update released for that model) it will only get further out of date.

I don't know if the Microdrives are user replaceable or can be swapped for a CF card (retail Microdrives plugged into a CF card slot). The later 2620s did have CF cards instead anyway as at around that time relatively large capacity CF cards become more realistically priced.

If you have the mapping data on DVD or on your PC and a myGarmin account with the unlock code etc. then it might be worth opening the case and seeing if you can swap the drive for a card, it depends on your confidence/ability in such matters. If the only mapping was on the GPS or you can't be bothered to try fixing it sell it on eBay for spares/repair and move on.

EDIT: Just found this, which leads to this. looks like you're out of luck I'm afraid :(

Just found this thread, and I guess I am wondering how things went, or whether it went in the bin with the Biryani?

A further question for all the knowledgeable guru's out there:

with the 2620 coming in two formats - with earlier ones with microdrive and later ones with CF drive...

does it mean that the latter ones had a slot drive space (or whatever the correct term is)?

TIA
