I currently have a DLink DSL-G604T wireless router/modem, and even with the laptop sat 7 feet from the router, I rarely get more than 2 bars in my signal - currently showing as connected at 1Mbps!

Which router/modem on the market currently has the strongest signal, so that I can move the laptop around the apartment?

strange - i've got a d-link 614 and can use it up to 30 feet away.

sure its not the receiver rather than the transmitter ??

I had a D-Link PCI wireless card in the desktop originally, and that couldn't keep a signal if my life depended on it.

Got an Intel Pro-Wireless module in the laptop now (wired the desktop in now).

I have a Netgear DG834G - full signal throughout the house - I've used the laptop in the garden but only just outside. I've never done a test to measure exactly how far it transmits.

You've got a problem somewhere. Can you get a decent signal in a hotspot, if so it's likely the access point playing up. I can get a good signal 20 foot from my Airport through a wall. Your Neighbour doesn't have a wireless on a similar channel? Try upping it by 3 channels to see if it gets better.

Incidentally you don't want 'the most powerful' access point, that leaks out of your flat and potentially exposes your network, some gateways allow you to turn the power down to keep it inside your home.

yup what ianf said - forgot about that, had a similar problem with my access point ages ago and experimenting with different channels did the trick

Channels?

Let alone the fact that I just tried to log in to my router and the password had changed itself back to the factory one  I had it set to a proper password
