Guys,

I have stripped down and powdercoated a single spark. Put everything back together like 5 times ( can confidently disassemble and assemble in less than an hour now).

Doing the valve checking I found that the right hand exhaust valve is sticking when fully pressed in by the cam. When the piston nudges the valve is seats back in with a snap...

Any ideas what is causing this and how to remedy? Dont particularly want to remove the head block again to take the valve out

Thanks

George

Got no choice I'm afraid, likely carbon buildup causing it to stick but it may be a bent valve stem so it needs to be out for inspection.

sticking valve

One thing you could try is to remove the exhaust and the camshaft and turn the crank so the piston is half way down the bore. push the offending valve open and spray brake cleaner around the valve stem through the exhaust port, try to move the vale slowly to clean any carbon build up away, it may work but you will need to make sure you clean any crud out of the bore before you build it up. If this doesnt work its probably a bent valve
Hope this helps Hovis

Valve was bent like a boomerang. Had to be very creative to get it out...

engine paint

The paint is peeling on both the GS and the CS any idea what colour to use.
The GS looks bog standard silver but the CS is more of a greyish colour. BMW have no idea what shade it is

In hind sight...I would not have embarked on the powder coating operation...way too much time and money...

The paint will still flake off if you don't passivate the aluminium of the engine case. And that ain't easy.

A wire brush some engine degreaser and cans of hammerite next time....
