Stuck in gear ? Try this before calling assistance.

Set off for 150 mile trip and 30 miles in I was stuck in 3rd. Gear lever operating fine just no changing of gear. It had full movement but nothing connecting somewhere inside the gearbox. Didn't fancy riding home in 3rd so stopped. Engine off me fiddled for a while. Nothing doing. Arranged recovery and told about an hour so googled stuck in gear. Found a thread I think on Adv Rider which suggested put on main stand remove left panel and rock rear wheel back and forth while operating gear lever. Sod removing panels but time on my hands so might as well rock the wheel and fiddle with the lever. Hey presto ! A few rocks and suddenly everything engaged up and down the box. Quick test ride and recovery cancelled. Done 400 miles since and bike seems perfect.
Will look into what might have happened when I have time but this might help someone else out.

It's a feature of the sequential shift non synchromesh gearbox.

Stopping in a high gear can leave the mechanism stuck. Slipping the clutch will cause the box to crash into the next gear. Turning the back wheel does the same thing without the crash.

1200 GS, 57 plate and 30k on the clock. Think the panel the thread referred to is the shroud covering the linkage where it goes into the gearbox. Tbh I took little notice as I had no intention of pulling bits off to dig any deeper.

No panel needed to be removed to fix the issue. If you are that bothered you can look it up. Most on here would be able to follow the post without difficulty.

The hung up shift mechanism is pretty typical for the box having got stuck mid shift in a high gear. It won't shift out of that at a standstill.
Riding with a car style gearshift (stopping in high gear then shifting to 2nd or first before accelerating) will cause problems.
It's sequential so has to be blipped down the box as you slow to a stop.

I confess to mild annoyance at the orange 'low fuel' warning light when I could clearly see 5 bars of fuel on the dashboard. It was some time before I realised why the fuel level wasn't dropping and the engine oil was stone cold. That was on my 1150 not the 12 mind you.
