Whilst I know a wee bit about pc's - enough to fix what I break anyway, my other half and his dobber mate have been irritating the hell out of me and I need a bit of help in finding out A: How they do it and B: How to stop them doing it!

It's pretty simple (like them) - a little message box flashes up on my screen saying something along the lines of 'Rab 3200 to Yam - date and time - then some ho ho ho so funny quip they've decided they simply must share with me.

I'm sure it's a basic windows function but it's not something I've seen before (sheltered IT life).

All the machines inc mine are networked and I believe all of them a running Windows 2000 - might be a 98SE somewhere and an XP toting laptop in the equation too but they're not involved in their little joke.

When I said I was going to find out how to stop them there were mentions of a batch file ... wtf that is, I don't know, but there was more sniggering involved

Any help appreciated - I hate to see them happy :D

They are doing this using the NET SEND command. You can get back at them by opening a command prompt (dos box), and typing:

net send computername "sod off you tossers"

where computername is the name of the computer they are using, i.e. the name by which it is known on the network.

This sort of thing goes on at work all the time. It's a childish programmer's thing, I think.

goto START, click RUN.

Type the following

NET STOP MESSENGER

press return. No more messages, until you restart your pc. To permanently stop it goto control panel, then services. Find messenger and click properties. You will find a startup option. Selection disabled.

Why, thank you, gentlemen!

That should keep them at bay until they find another way to irritate the only non-geek in the house :)

Many thanks, once again.

Or you simply tap them lightly with a lump hammer when they least expect it (and without explanation) and leave them to work out why? :D

Mzokk, as you know, I'm the picture of calm and serenity, I'd never put the fear of god into my housemates for something so trivial ..... ;)
