I have an interesting BMW project bike I have made starting with a brand new BMW R1200 GS non-ABS model.

The bike currently is set up in a "Sports-Touring" dress for longer rides such as all day and/or over night stays. In a later thread I will be posting pictures of the same bike stripped of all of the "Touring" accessories and in a more aggressive "Sports" mode of dress.

I used 400 pounds ( one kg = 2.205 US pounds weight) as a target weight. I do not proclaim reaching this goal weight, but if you look over the project you will see that I have used an extensive amount of Carbon Fiber, Titanium, Aluminum/Magnesium, and other exotic materials to lower the functional weight of the bike.

I used a BMW R1200GS because I wanted the versatility of the GS platform, for example; by simply adding and/or removing components I can use the bike for "Touring", "Sports" riding, or a mixed "Sports-Touring" dress.

My next BMW project will be similar project bike where I start with a new BMW HP2 Sport model and do a full remodel of the bike reducing weight, and upgrading the performance of the bike in areas of braking, suspension, handling, and engine performance, along with a custom paint job too. Lots of carbon, titanium, and aluminum/magnesium will be used as I am already starting my design plans .

Please go to the ADVENTURE RIDER WEBSITE;

www.advrider.com

Go to the "G Spot" section related to the BMW GS models

Go to the thread titled

"Sub 400 pound BMW R1200GS ???"

You will be introduced to my project bike and find pictures of the bike on the second page ( page 2) of the thread.

Rather that reintroduce the thread on this website, Im introducing it this way because Im not good with computers and dont know how to post my own pictures, nor do I know how to add a link to a thread that I start here.

I hope you enjoy my project BMW.

thanks

:)

Nice

Checked your bike out on ADV Rider, looks real cool, certainly got plenty of comments from those boys over the pond, coolcarbon from here would love the look of that baby,it must have taken you some garage hours to get that look...............:Motomartin

What - you mean this old clunker......!?!?!? :augie

Very nice. :D A couple of observations - you appear to be running a front mudguard for a 19" wheel. I'm sure you know that there are ones for 17" wheels available. Also, you have a UK tax disc holder bolted to the final drive unit - in San Diego....? :nenau

This is mine, all i have left to take off is the Rack and engine bars but i couldnt be a----
The exclusion of ABS and a full system makes a big weight saving.

Nice but not my cup o tea, each to their own and all that.
Just a little bit too much going on for me.
Race reps suit being covered in carbon but not the GS.
Front mudguard/fender definately not a GS fitment.
Not slagging off, just my opinion, Nuff said.

I am in the process of looking for a front hugger that better fits the 17" front wheel conversion.

Im also playing with the idea of doing away with the front hugger altogether. The GS front beak will give the bike a "high fender" look like from a SuperMoto/Motard. I dont ride in wet weather if I can help it, so I think I can get by without the front hugger if I decided to try it that way.

Regarding the carbon fiber tax disc holder; I do all of my riding in the Rocky Mountain canyons of Colorado where I live. I live 50 or 60 miles away from the highest paved road in North America. The summit of Mount Evans in Colorado is 14,264 feet about sea level. I live a little over a mile high over 5280 feet above sea level.

I have the carbon fiber tax disc holder on my bike to hold National Park Passes that we need to buy and display if/when we drive or park a motorized vehicle within the bounds of the National Park. Rather that tape it to the bike somewhere I decided to use the tax disc holder .....I think it looks better than the standard method of taping the pass onto the bike somewhere.

Thanks for the comments

It brings up the topic of "when is a GS not a GS?".......

I understand that the project bike may not please everyone. The people who do Dual Sports and/or off road riding seem to think that the project bike is "over the top". And I tend to agree with this. If I used the bike for dual sports and/or rode off road I would do the bike completely different.

About 5 years ago I was involved in a severe MVA where a car hit me from behind when I was stopped at a red stop light sitting on one of my BIMOTAs. I was severely injured from this MVA and I have had to completely give up riding off road. The only type of riding my injured body can tolerate is riding on well groomed pavement, and even this is difficult and can be painful.

The BMW project bike I built for me, and the type and style of riding I do with the bike.

I have a collection of exotic off road motorcycles that I still have, but I cant ride. Maybe Ill post some pictures of a few of these project off road and dual sports bikes as a comparison to my latest GS project.

I have a number of bikes, and I tend to work on a number of bike projects at the same time. For example; the current bike project Im doing is taking a brand new BIMOTA Tesi 3D and doing a complete make over of the bike. To date I have replaced every possible fastener and piece of hardware with titanium. I have magnesium engine cases and covers to R&R, and plan to upgrade the engine with a lot of high performance parts. The bike came with a DS1100 Ducati engine with a wet clutch, and Im doing a dry clutch conversion as well. I have a long list of changes to do to this project and it will take me until next year to complete it.

Sorry for going off topic......anyway, thanks for all of the commments.

Enjoy the ride :)

Naaah, don't worry 'bout critics, you like your bike, that's the main thing. Me too, I like the versatility of the GS, from sporty to off road. Since I hardly do the latter, I've tried to do away with as much weight as possible. So, gone are the rear crud catcher, hand protectors, engine bash plate, screen, pillion seat, and luggage rack. But, I've added an inner fender, 'Flowjet' screen, and I've put the handlebar higher.

The result is exactly what I like to ride and see :

And when travelling time comes up it's a piece of cake changing her. Have fun with yours ! :beerjug:

Sorry doatoys1 but ya grass needs cutting and ya have a box of weeds lying around that will contaminate ya borders :rob

Stop fecking about with that tarts handbag and get some gardening done before ya go posting pictures on here :blast:blast:blast

All that carbon hasn't made it handle any better has it :augie:augie:augie

Ooooh, nearly forgot, I agree with ya valuation :thumb2:D

dont like it.

you should have bought a different bike,
mind you how much did you say you weigh? 400 pound?

probably right bike then:comfort

Na is a cool bike with a lot of money pored into it. Only thing I cant work out is if your so intent on reducing weight why did you stick unnecessary covers on such as the FD, swingarm and forks? I like CF so from a looks point of view IMHO its a good looking bike but from a pure weight loss point of view it could have done without the covers.
