Hey Gang,

Yesterday I was riding through a tunnel when I flicked on high beam. The light came on and then went off again, showing LAMPF (but no warning light). It's a HID50 kit from Les which I fitted a couple of years back and has been working fine ever since, so I don't think it's the same issue as this thread, unless one of the connections has become corroded.

Right now whenever I try to engage high beam (engine on or off, before or after long run etc) the lamp does come on for about half a second together with a buzzing noise, and it seems to be more blue than the low beam during it's brief bout of activity. Then it goes off again, and subsequent attempts to re-engage it result in briefer periods of activity ending in the same result.

The only thing I can think of that's changed recently is that I've wired a new GPS directly to the battery, but I've been doing 200+ miles most days and can't think that this alone would produce enough of a drain to affect battery voltage, though I can't check that right now. Bike starts and runs normally, and I've only used the heated bits occasionally, mostly at altitude.

Any ideas most gratefully received, especially if the dip beam decides to join in the fun.

Cheers!
M.

Sounds like the ballast has gone awol - nothing to do with the GPS. Its worth checking all the connections just the same. If you have the same fitted to the dipped beam then swap them over and see if the fault follows.

+1 on the ballast. Had a couple go myself. Replaced them and all is well again.

Thanks guys, the swap-it-and see diagnosis was my next port of call. If having two HID lights (and the associated inability to flash properly with your high beam) is the cloud then the availability of 'spares' on the road is the silver lining. ;)

As it happens I still had the LAMPF message when I started her up this morning, but when I tried high beam it worked just fine, and the warning went away. It's been OK ever since, though high beam still looks more blue than low beam. Maybe the latter of these has become discoloured over time and I haven't noticed, possibly through whatever vapours are being given off as the HID 'bulb' slowly cremates my reflector. C'est la vie. Will keep an eye on it...

Cheers!

Just out of interest Gazza, was it the high beam or low beam ballasts that you had to replace, and at what sort of intervals. I'm assuming it was normal wear and tear rather than anything more serious.

2 low beams one on mine one on the missus"s GSA. Both 35 watts.
Also had a 50 watt spot one give up as well.
Can't remember the exact timing but I do remember mine was just over a year old when it went
