I've got AVG & Spybot on my pc. I recently keep getting hit by adverts, what free download would you recomend, that you've tried & tested yourselves?

These aren't what I would call pop ups, they're blocked by the either AVG or Spybot. These appear on the task bar at the bottom of the pc, usually trying to flog me a phone.

B & Q vouchers now!

That sounds like at somepoint you've unknowingly had a toolbar of some description installed, most probably with another piece of software IE when you install Winzip it will also install the google toolbar if you don't UNcheck the relevant box.

When the advert is actually displayed hold down the 'Ctrl' & 'Alt' keys together and whilst holding them tap the 'Delete' key this will bring up a window telling you what applications are being run at that time, note the name of the one with the advert and then go into add/remove progs and delete the bugger, hope that does it:thumb2

Whilst your at it make sure you've downloaded the latest updates for Spybot, there has been a boat load recently, and then immunise again.

Just as easily, get and run HiJackThis (it's free) and post a logfile here for someone to analyse. :)

If I log onto a financial institution, related adverts appear on the bottom of the screen. So something knows what I'm looking at:blast:eek:

Ah, I thought that updates automatically covered that. So, I just delete the old version & update to the 1.5 version then? Last time a new version came along, I thought Spybot sent out a notice about it?

Dickieboy, every time I turn the PC on, I update Spybot , & AVG (if it hasn't done automatically)

I've removed version 1.4 & updated to 1.5. I never feel totally happy doing this when Spybot asks if I'm sure that I want to do this due to changes made, etc. etc.

Apart from these adverts, the PC has been running slow recently so, I'm tempted to install Norton:eek: despite lot of peple on here slating it. I'm with BT Broadband, so it comes free. perhaps I could install it, run it, see if it finds anything dodgy Then ether leave it on the PC, or delete it & re install, Spybot, AVG & the latest addition, Spywareblaster.
What do you think O great knowledgable ones?

Whatever you do don't install Norton you will regret it. If spybot isn't picking it up log onto

or
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

pay about £8 for a six month subscription to one of them, they will get everything that the free version of AVG picks up plus loads of other spyware and malware.
I did it last year to prevent having to do a complete format and reboot, best money I spent on a computer, I can't remember which one though only it was the cheapest:thumb2
