Super Enduro or 690 Enduro R (pre 2012)

It may come down to choice, more 690's than SE's around and I've seen a very nice 690 with all the right rally raid gear ( protection, tanks, fairing etc...)

I think if I did not have the XC I'd be buying the 690 but I'm still thinking will it be a special enough change? ( because for all the logic owning bikes is an emotional thing)

I suppose what I want to hear is a 690 on road is as good or better than a XC and off road you think you're riding a bike 25% lighter/smaller

Apart from suspension the differences maybe aren't too great
I had a brief ride on Beamers (cheers Kev) just a couple of miles on the road
It felt great, but the chassis was 'twitchier' than the XCHALLENGE
I wasn't blown away by the power & thought there was little difference
The XChallenge has a very linear power delivery instead of a 'big hit', so can be deceptive
I've found the Xchallenge can out drag most 650's on the road
I really need a proper ride on a 690 as no doubt they superb - but both bikes seem to be pretty similar
If the bike you mention is the one on eBay, in Devon - be careful it seems to have a hard life

Ime currently in the process of deciding what needs sorting on my X challenge for a trip to America in 2013 on Bilcos TAT tour.

Obviously ill need to give it a good overall service, bearings etc, but it will also need a rear shock (air shock fitted and showing signs of wear) at a cost of about £650 (hyperpro), i will also need i think to do the radiator upgrade (pace) £400, and ime also concerned about the strength of the rear sub frame having heard of afew failures. The last thing i want is for it to fail and ruin the holiday which isnt cheap. (£400-£500).

All the reports you hear about the 690e seem posotive, and i feel they are built with more off road bias in mind.

So do i spend about £1500 upgrading my x challenge or do i put that money towards a 690e which would be ideal for the trip with very little additional expense needed.:comfort

I doubt that, most of those seem to be extensively modded too

I've had the same thoughts, however it comes down

I've got the XChallenge

I Like the XChallenge

I think the motor is good on the XChallenge

It's not Orange

So I think I'll press on with it, much like HP2e owners do - when the 950SE is in reality a far better proposition in terms of suspension, power and price
 
The conclusion I'm reaching is:

If an SE came up for sale I'd be hoping I was th first to spot it and make the 'I'll have it call'

Yet I'm currently watching a few 690's from lightly used 690 R's to well used but with all the right mods rally bikes and although close to making the call it's just not happening.

Looks like the SE has it...

Or do I give up on finding one, keep the XC and buy a Randy Boxer Cup- Que next thread :-)

Can't see why the 690 wouldn't be as good as the XC on tarmac? Best mod is to fit a 16t front sprocket (same as the SMC) for more relaxed cruising and improved MPG. Fitting a 690 Duke screen or similar is a cheap mod for a bit of weather protection.

there was on on ebay (now ended) with £3000 of Rally Raid kit on it. - he's looking for £5,800

The 2010 version of the 690R is the best one. The new ones have shorter suspension.

The Husky 630TE is the equal of the 690 (many say it's better after riding one, even if they own a 690 which is interesting) and you can get a 2011 one for about 4 and a half grand which can't be beaten money wise when compared to a 690. They aren't made anymore so not easy to find but now and again one comes up. Moly is selling his I think though I haven't seen it advertised yet. His is VERY trick with different forks etc.

thanks to Arsey singing the praises of the se i plummed for one and have to say it brings a smile to my face on each ride,started spending on several pending mods but still have not fitted the new parts yet,the thought of being with out the se for a long period made me go and buy another so now i have 2 the 2nd one has been set up with akros and the emission gubbins blanked off what a difference this makes along with a 16t front sprocket.highly recommended.

Both are great bikes and you'd be happy with both. 5 years after selling a 690 you'll have probably forgotten about it. With an SE something genetic will change in you. When lying on your death bed[1] with your family gathered around you, you'll speak in hushed tones of this mental 100hp, 10 foot high dirt bike you once had, your grand kids will speak in the play ground of their mad grand dad who once took life by the throat and lived with his heart not his head. You'll pass away quivering with what once was....

It is possible I may have had too much coffee this morning.

Totally understandable as the SE is in my opinion the finest bike ever made. It's the only bike I've ever owned that brings a smile to my face every time I see it and still takes my breath away every time I open her up and let rip.
No GS ever did that !!
