As you may be aware I'm hoping to swap my Stelvio NTX for a new 2014 S10 fairly soon. During the first two years it will be dealer serviced to keep warranty intact, after which i'll do most of it myself.
Both of my Guzzis have been fairly inexpensive for the annual dealer service, and are quite easy for owner maintenance, a service light does come on but the owner is easily able to access the onboard computer and disable the service required light. Does the Tenere have anything similar, and what are service costs like?
 
No service indicator on the S10.
I have had 3 services on mine. All franchised dealers. All gave me a loan bike at no extra charge.
29-4-13, SWales Superbikes, 6134 miles, £199.27
3-2-14 Frasers, Gloucester, 13021 miles, £268.91 - this included an MOT at £29
21-10-14, Skellerns, Cheltenham, 19,006 miles, £366.54 - this included extra items but is still expensive compared to the others (labour rate is £10 an hour more than SWSB and oil is more per litre).
Skellerns is only a mile from home but Frasers are not far from my work so I may go back there for the next service, if I haven't changed bikes.
 
I don't think you have to use a yam dealer for the servicing just to keep the warranty intact, it can be anyone as long as they are VAT reg'd.

they don't need to be VAT registered - under EU rules anyone can service the bike and the warranty will be kept intact as long as you can prove you used approved parts and kept to the approved schedule. So you can do it yourself, use the checklist in the user manual or download a checklist off the website and have an invoice for parts showing the purchase of genuine Yamaha filters, NGK plugs etc.

What you miss out on are those service bulletins that don't make it to a recall notice e.g. a change to software and the ability to run proprietary diagnostics.
 
6k is basically oil and filter changes with a tyre kick thrown in, should be well under £200

12k includes spark plugs which adds @£40 (four of them) and a good hour to the labour bill, plus a FD oil change (5 minutes work and £3 of oil) so expect around £300.

18k As 6k but I think this is when the air filter is changed so expect around £200

24k is as 12k plus tappet check / shim, generally they do not move, but still a long job, main dealers are likely to be around £500 - £600 at main dealer, I will get this done at a local trusted indie for about £300 - £350.
 
I was surprised how reasonable the service costs have been so far. Even cheaper than Mr Rasher mentions above. I am bracing myself for the big 24k service in the distant future, though.

Home servicing is generally meant to be simple but I am happy to pay someone to do it and therefore make the most of my free time. My local dealer is excellent and as cheap as any good independent in my area .

Thanks for the replies. As I usually average about 5k to 6k miles per year on my main bike (which the Yam will be), I reckon by the time the two year warranty has expired I will have had the 12k service done by the dealer. I'll probably do the servicing myself after that. I know checking the valve gaps can take a while, if any need reshimming I will take it to the dealer, also if the engine starts to run a bit rough I'll take it in for a diagnostics check. The Tenere seems to be a fairly straight forward bike to maintain, and I'll probably continue with my normal oil change routine at half the recommended mileage, a bit anal I know :)
 
Price of 2014 model

Do not want to high jack the thread but this is related. What would you pay for 2014 model bearing in mind that the 2015 bikes are in and will probably be as hard to move as the previous years.

This should be a buyers market particularly when you factor in the price that Yamaha uk are asking for list when compared to the USA price

A dealer is advertising one for £8999 on Autotrader - if that is the ticket price then I imagine some negotiation will bring it down a bit more.
 
That one you mention is not a 2014 model, it's a new old stock bike, maybe 2013. The 2014 bikes have LED clear lens indicators, the bike shown has the orange lens covers.

My 2014 model was £10,030 otr for the non ES standard model. I got some discount and free fitting on the accessories I opted for.
 
As there is no functional changes from 2014 to 2015 I would not expect as bigger discount as there was this time last year with left over 2013 stock.

Fatal seemed to get a decent deal, I would be looking to save at least an extra £500 over a 2015 if it was a proper new bike (i.e. unregistered model so could be registered on the latest 2015 plate, and at least a grand if buying a pre-reg bike with zero miles.

When I bought mine in 2012 it was a 6 month old 2011 model with just 149 miles on the clock and I managed to get £2600 of the list price at the time (I paid £9400 against a list price of £11995) against the best discount of just over a grand on a brand new one = £1500 saving for the last plate and 149 miles seemed a good deal to me.

Had the 6,000 mile service at Tinklers this week, as above plus FD oil, had half a bottle from 600 mile service and it is £23 a bottle :eek: but I will be having it changed at every service, unlike the sealed for (short) life on a certain manufacturers bikes::green gri
Was told the 12K service is more or less the same and then plugs done at 18K and tappet check at 24K
 
On my 2011 plugs and FD oil is every 12k.

The FD only holds about 1/4L so a bottle should do at least 3 changes, and top spec stuff can be found for under £20, I do mine every service, but think this is overkill as nobody has managed to destroy a final drive yet and a fair few are past 100k now and many more have topped 50k without issues, with the exception of the odd weeping seal which is not a bike stopper and cheap to fix.
