Hi there everyone hope you all had a good new year so far, small question, I have the chance to purchase a crash damaged GS1150 adventure not the complete bike but the parts I want suspention looks undamaged could I install the forks and front shock on the my GS1150 and the rear shock. The other thing I was thinking of doing is fitting the Adventure gear box mine has a tendendancy to slip out of overdrive back in to 5th from time to time and the Adv gar box has better ratios for off road work (true or not??)
any help greatly sought after, thanks Richard.:beerjug:

Don't know about the suspension but the Adventure has a lower 1st gear than all the other 1150's & 6th is 18mph per 1,000rpm instead of the 20mph that most but not all regular 1150's have.

as ADV shocks are longer than a stock GS, you will need longer stands from the ADV too.

but personally i wouldn't give 2p for standard bmw shocks anyway ;)

Hi Richard,

Technically no problems, although the bike will be higher (about an inch or so), so new stands will be a must - can you get them from the 'donor' bike?

There's no need to fit the forks (unless yours are knackered) - they're also interchangeable.

The low first gear in the Adv gearbox is a factory option, so may not be in the donor transmission, although it will have the low top gear. I don't think the gearing, which is otherwise identical to the GS lite, makes any difference (other than the low 1st, if fitted) - the low top gear is a feature I'd get rid of, given the option - makes the occasional 'positioning' trip on fast roads less economical...

If you're swapping the gearbox, don't forget to put a new clutch plate in there at the same time - false economy no to...;)

Mike:)

Thanks

Thanks guys good you mentioned the stands forgot about that, the ones on the doner bike are ok so will use them.

Will let you know what happens.:beerjug:

1150 g/box

I had the same problem on my 1150 (2002) but fortunatly was replaced under warrenty. It had only done about 6000 miles at the time. I believe that the internals were modified to stop the problem occuring. May be worth trying BMW to assist in costs. They do somtimes !!! honest !!! i was supprised as well.

Gearbox

Irrespective of low first the lower top gives much a better ratio IMHO than the O/D for normal road use (unless you do a lot of motorway work that is) I had two standard GSs' & was concerned that I wouldn't get on with the lower top but now I consider it more useful as it's much more responsive than the overdrive.

Cheers

Ade
