Suspension...service or buy new??

Well, the old girls done me proud over the last 76,000 miles and the suspension has gone a little soft so it's time to spend some cash. :eek So the options are, do I find someone to re gas and re build with new springs fitted or bite the bullet and get the Hyperpro streetbox kit from Calsport at £843? :eek:
 
Have you done 76,000 miles on the original shocks:eek If so they'll have been fooked for ages. Personally I'd hold out for a good used set on here or ebay - you should be able to pick up a set of Ohlins/Wilbers for sub £500. It's been stated loads of times on here but changing to well setup aftermarket shocks will literally transform the handling of the bike.
 
You can have a rebuild of the original units but they will probably still only be mediocre as they were specified and built to a relatively low price. I thought that my standard items were knackered at 35,000 miles and noticed a huge difference, really amazing improvement, when I fitted Wilbers units at each end . If you ride gently the rebuild will probably see you through 100,000. If you ride hard and enjoy the brilliant handling pay for the HyperPro's.
 
Just had my original rear shock fettled by All Bike Engineering. So far so good. £100 and a 24 hour turn around. It had lasted 97,000 miles.

He does two prices for repairs: £100 or £160 if the rod needs replacing.

if the bike is'nt throwing you off at every bump, i'd leave them on, unless you're a wannabe rossi, then you'll have to get the super duper one's, of course,
and why would you want to change the spring's,
 
The "non-servicable" struts CAN be overhauled/serviced by an experienced shock technician (they'll just add valve and use other neat tricks with seals etc) but as said, often it's not worth it since with so much wear on various parts it's a gamble if it'll hold or not, I reckon it's better to wear it out till it starts to crack teeth in your mouth or just pisses out oil and throw it away then.
 
My originals have become very harsh after 57,000 miles (particularly at normal speeds, they're better if the bike is pushed hard but I don't think the police will appreciate that explanation). Oil is still inside, as far as I know, so looking to change and keep the old ones as emergency spares. Might be different if a cheap refurb option was just down the road, but having to send them to the far end of a lightly-populated country and pay lots of money to be without them for a while doesn't make so much sense...
