Swing-arm gaitor detached from gearbox

On my 02 1150GS, I've noticed the swing-arm gaitor has become detached from the gearbox. Damn!
An online parts fiche shows that there IS a clip on the swing-arm end to secure it but not on the gearbox end - even if access was possible.

Any tips to ensure that it will stay in place after I go to all the trouble of refitting it? Could it be that the gaitor has shrunk or hardened with age?

maybe some shower sealent stuff would help.
Its a PITA to get back and I remember at the time thinking that it wasnt really that well attached or water / dust tight.

I put it back with just the clip holding it however and all seems fine
