Has anyone on the 1200GS experienced any corrosion around the rear axle on the swingarm on the 1200 at all? Not being technically minded, all I can describe it as is around the round black circle (if you know what I mean)?

Reason I ask is that my R1200RT (don't boo) has some all the way around it and I am in the process of exploring options with BMW at the minute, mainly because I have only just bought it.

Reason I have posted here is that someone has mentioned that 1200GS's are known to corrode around this part, is that a fair comment? Has anyone any experiences of this?

I would really appreciate some honest answers if possible.

My GSA has rust spots around the inner "hole".
Can't say I've seen enough mention of it to be "known for it" though.

not around the swing arm, but I've got what look like bubbles of rust coming up around the filler cap... on the outer ring where it bolts into the tank

I'm not sure I understand what you mean :nenau

Are you refering to corrosion within the hollow axle piece or on the final drive housing around the axle/black plastic ring?

Got any piccies?

I have had some surface rust on the inside of the axle hole. I used a dremel tool with an abrasive paper sanding disc. It made easy work to polish it up again. I now spray some light lubricant in there now and then and havn't had any more problems.

As it happens, I was looking at an 05 GS today and noticed exactly the corrosion you describe. In fact the bike was covered with bubbling paint as well, rusty footrests, paint off pannier hangers, dented and corroded wire wheels. Way worse than my 04 bike ever was.

Then I had a look at some japcrap in the local dealers, and some Hinckley Triumphs, and they were all similar. Why bikes rot faster than cars I can only guess.

look under the wheel arch of a car & see what wishbones, struts, steering parts looks like.
bodywork covers everything and stays shiny. don't often see corroded tanks etc. on bikes.
