Swinging arm cover sheered off

Try norman himself I have found him to be a good guy to deal with

I've tried removing it with pliers, but it aint going anywhere! Anyone got any ideas how I can get it out?:nenau

Try filing a pair of flats on the shank of the bolt so you can get an open ended spanner onto it.

What size is the bolt? M8, M10, M12....

Not sure what size bolt, but will try that:thumb

Just tried to take the Nippy Normans swinging arm cover off my bike, and it came off in my hand, leaving the bolt in the bike.:blast

It's one of these:

Hi mate. Not sure on the fastener you need to remove - if it is a bolt and you have some thread exposed the filing method is good, otherwise carefully drilling and using an `easy-out` wil work (be careful if the bolt is or was high tensile). If it is a HT grub screw (which I think it `might be`) try carefully tapping an oversize (or imperial) allen key end into it to give you extra purchase with some mole grips. If you send me an image to [email protected] I`ll try and help you further - if you are near to my factory you can come up and I`ll use everything at my disposal to help you.

Cheers Mark, I appreciate your help. Here are some pics:

Its the small bolt in the middle. I was thinking of taking the 3 bolts off to see if I can get to it that way, but am afraid that the shaft would fall off!:D

The sheared off piece of threaded stud doesn't do anything and is part of the Nippy Normans swinging arm cover.

It should be possible to undo the three torx screws to remove the right pivot pin. The swinging arm will have to be carefully supported with the pivot pin removed.

With the pivot pin removed, clamp the broken threaded piece firmly in a bench vice and rotate the pivot pin anti-clockwise to remove. Replace pivot in. The end float adjustment of the swinging arm takes place at the left hand pivot pin and if you don't undo the left hand pivot pin lock nut there should be no need for re-adjustment.

Phew! Will I be able to screw another bolt in there (not so tight next time!:D)?

Nice work! :thumb

How did you get the part which you linked into that space and fastened it so tightly that it snapped it's fastening bolt? Surely it must only be hand tight and use some grease. :blast

BTW. When broken bolts and studs start to fall apart, as in your pic's, stop what you are doing and re-evaluate your approach. :thumb

try bashing on a very tight nut with a hammer and keep it square, then try. a socket on the nut.:thumb

Sorted?

rt001 - did you get it sorted pal? Sorry, I sneaked off but it looks like you`ve had lots of other forum help?

If its still not done I remain happy to assist.

Regards,

Mark.

PS And with upmost repsect to the good intentioned Fellow Tosser :bow please think carefully before you hammer a nut onto the broken bolt shank, I am not too sure that in this application that is the correct remedy.

Thanks everyone.:beerjug: A mate in the trade is popping over tomorrow, and reckons he will be able to sort it. Like Ditchwater said, sometimes when things go wrong you should just leave them and walk away, not go hell for leather with a pair of pliers.:blast

The cover was done up by hand about a year ago, so I guess it just became stiff with all the vibrations, hence why it was so difficult to get off.:rob:D
