As well as sorting instrument bulbs, I also thought I'd clean up a mess left by a moth that had gotten inside the tacho (so the LEDs were obviously working for a while!).

The problem I had is I'm unclear how to disassemble the tacho to get in there? I could see two sets of different size screws (I figured the larger set) and assumed one or both needed to be removed. I was also unclear if the cable into the unit unplugs or is wired into it?

Anyone with more experience of this job?

Cheers

Pull all the lamp holders, trace the wiring back and disconnect the plug.

Undoing the screws will not help, leave them in place. The outer black bezel is what holds the glass on and will allow you access.

You may want to try blowing the moth out with some low pressure air first.

If not, its bezel off time.

You will need to lever up the black bezel all the way around the circumferance from the back. Be really careful using a small flat blade screwdriver. Lever up a little bit and carry on going round the outside a few times. Put tape around the bezel as well to protect it when the screwdriver slips (and it will).

When reassembling, very carefully tap the black bezels edge all the way around again. Then use a smear of silicon (bathroom stuff is fine) to ensure its sealed up properly.

Because of the way it sits in the 'dash' this will not be visable afterwards.

I wouldnt attemt this whilst its still connected to the bike, the tacho really should be removed.

Hope that helps.

Fatnfast. Thanks for the tips. Very helpful. I did see a post some while back where someone showed what you've described but obviously it had disappeared from my busy mind! Looks like I'll be doing exactly as you suggest. Cheers.

Fanum. I do like those dial faces! Clearly you've had'em off and apart at some point?! Info on how you did it but mostly where you got them would be great :-). I actually don't warm to the black dials which I think it's why I like the LED bulb replacements so much.

Not my bike I'm afraid.......you'll notice the speedo is in KMH as well.

Those ones came from HERE, but I do seem to remember a thread on this very site going back years where somebody made a set for an imported bike to change from KM to MPH, and he made the new dials white :nenau

Bear with me, 'm getting there.......

These are dead smart BTW :)

Nope........white dial replacements in MPH don't pop up easily....I'm sure someone will do them though :)

EDIT....HERE'S a company who offer faceplate customisation, and they do the standard black BMW ones so I doubt they'd have much of a problem doing white ones

I really do need to get rid of that moth. It's clearly letting me down big time :D

Fanum, you're just teasing me now. All those links are dead ends :roll eyes:
